Makes sense. If the point was to immerse the visitors in the scenery, then you can't let them see how it operates. It's like having servants. Visitors aren't supposed to know they exist, and the food appears and rooms are cleaned like it's magic.

[Not the most flattering of comparisons, but that is what the cramped stairway feels like: the backroom passages not meant for the main family.]
