[ Early May, a message is sent out to Outsiders inviting them to an amusement park experience without giant monsters (or corpses of them). At a much smaller fairground in the city's outskirts, Elan and Taryon have got a few rides hooked up and working, including rollercoasters, teacups, go-karts...honestly feel free to headcanon your own it's our castle now.

Most notable is the ferris wheel towering over the park. The view from the air is fantastic but the ride is not without its hitches and the power may cut out from time to time. Don't worry, your technicians are on it. Get comfortable inside and enjoy each other's company...

One half of the park remains out of order. A few rides are functional but rickety so if you are looking for a different kind of thrill by all means...Elan will tell you not to touch them if he sees you he will not be responsible for anyone's deaths!

Dinner's BYO(B) but he's brought a handful of fireworks for people to set off at night. Have at it!

i. welcome

[ Look, sometimes you want to experience an amusement park not from the cockpit of a mobile suit or in hazmat amongus cosplay because the constant reminder of death really kills the vibe. Elan feels cheated out of a theme park trip that's part of every normal teenage experience, hence involving Taryon and revitalizing an old fairground. Throughout the day he'll be sidling up to people to see if they're having fun, especially if they're by themselves or look like they need their arm wrung to try the rides. ]

How is it?

[ Before a pick of fireworks, he holds out a matchbox, grinning. ]

Want to do the honors?

[ Alternatively, watch out for one of the spinning fireworks whizzing across the ground your way. Accident or on purpose? With him, you never know. ]

iii. chilling

[ At the end of the day, join him for a bento box dinner and idle chatter inside an old park trailer, or in climbing on top of the trailer roof to watch the stars. Staring out at the half-lit park, Elan looks wistful for a moment. ]

It's probably nothing like the real thing, but beats being cooped up at base.

It's... fine, I suppose.

[Unfortunately, you've got moodkiller Manjoume here, who is just sort of wallflowering or studying the equipment instead of partaking in any of the rides himself just yet. The only amusement park he has been into in his life, aside from the one that they had to fight those lizard kaiju in, was Kaibaland... and he had been brainwashed and in a cult at the time, so it's highly doubtful he actually got to enjoy being there either.]

I'm impressed that you were able to get any of these back up.

[ as much as he might want to... akechi is going to resist the carnival rides.

he's never really had a chance to... but, no. that's not important right now.

however; he can't resist the fireworks. he remembers setting them off as a kid, and... as foolish as it might be, he can't help but want to set some off now, too.

he readies a bottle rocket and lights it, backing away. ]

[Of course, Raidou had never been to a place like this before their missions, and he could only imagine what sort of place this must have been in its heyday. For a guy from 1922, it all seems fantastical. What's even more amazing to him is that Elan and Taryon actually managed to get these old things up and running. It's remarkable that they'd be working at all, let alone some still be useble.

Strangely, the first thing that catches his eye is the carousel. That's one thing this place has in common with his time, and he's a little surprised to see how it looks like it could have been plucked right from the Capital and dropped here. He gives the ride a fond look, tracing a finger along one of the horses, a layer of dust coming with it as he does.]

Do they have these where you're from?

[Raidou didn't have a lot of time to cook for this party, but it's been fun diving into these things people have called hobbies that he certainly never had time for in his previous life. So he tries to make as much time for it as he can in his similarly busy life here.

That just means it's time for onigiri, something easy to transport and easy for everyone to eat on the go, as well. There are a few different varieties, at least. For dessert is also something simple but crowd-pleasing: chocolate chip cookies. These, however, are made with all dark chocolate, due to a past request by a certain someone.]

003. - Locked to Yuji
[It's simple: Raidou taking him by the hand, a smile on his face as he nods towards the ferris wheel. He's never been on one before, and it'd a cool vantage spot for the fireworks display. Fancy a ride on the giant rusty maybe-deathtrap?]

[ choso doesn't back up, as he'd already lined up a respectful distance away as it were, but he does plop down to sit on his heels, knees to chest with a little blob of red hovering over his head like a strange, tiny balloon.

most of his attention is on the tiny rocket, but he reserves a fair slice of it for the lad lighting the thing, just in case something went awry. (as if the art of lighting tiny incendiaries wasn't the safest hobby in the world, silly curse.) ]

[ Yuji has been excited about the ferris wheel since they arrived, so the chance to go on it... He brightens, linking his fingers with Raidou's before he nods, burning with enthusiasm. ]

Let's do it! I want to see how high it goes!

[He's pretty excited himself, leading him over there in a fast walk.]

I've never been on one before. I'd only heard about them. I wonder how much of the city we'll be able to see from up there?

[The whole thing does seem a little beaten, and the seat squeals a bit as the rust is shaken out of its joints and mechanisms. Raidou looks at Yuji with an unsure look for a moment, but ultimately grins.]

... You can jump pretty far, yeah?

A lot of it, I think! Bakugo and I were gonna climb it when we were hunting the scientists before.

[ Y’know, on the mission where he almost got zapped to death.

The question has him pausing, though, and he nods. ]

Sure? I’ve never measured it or anything.

[That would have been a more fun way to spend the mission, honestly.]

Mm. I'd bet he'd have turned it into a race between you two.

[It's Bakugo after all.

The ferris wheel chugs to life to start letting on other people, and they move forward with a lurch before it's smooth sailing. Raidou looks at him again when it does that initially, though.]

I hope so, in case this turns out to be a bad idea.

[Whoever the hell convinced Bakugo to come here should be congratulated. Between the rides that look like a safety violation to the flashbacks of the last theme park he'd been at-- fucking lightning lizards --tromping around another one has been a weird as fuck experience. If anything, he's more curious about how these two weirdos got the park up and running again.

He's not going on the rides unless someone cajoles him incessantly, though he has once or twice looked at the go karts. Shut up. It's never not a temptation to beat the shit out of someone who thinks they can outrace him on the track. But... there are fun death carts, and there are carts that might blow up under your ass or end up dragging your face across the pavement.]

Two of those things aren't gonna make it through the day.

[Bakugo gestures to the kart track as he accepts one of the cookies from Raidou. Only to pause after taking a bite, looking down at the treat in hand.]

Huh. These are good.

[Genuinely sounds surprised at the flavor. Look, Raidou's a good cook. But these taste great.]

[ That's rough, buddy.... but as a fellow deprived teen, this hangout's for him. ]

Don't trip over yourself with excitement.

[ He remarks drly at Manjoume's surly disposition, but he'll take 'just fine' to be a compliment. Taryon is the truly skilled one behind the project, all Elan's done is 'borrow' some equipment to make it work shhhh he'll put it back. He gives Manjoume a look. Don't think he hasn't noticed him wallflowering! ]

What are you standing around for?

[ Elan will wait until Taryon's had his fill of fun and rides before he approaches him on the fairground to broach the other topic they agreed to meet about. Ah, but first— ]

Great work, Mister Engineer.

[ He couldn't have pulled it off alone, so Taryon gets plus points in his book, and for whatever it's worth, Elan's opinion of science has also improved a tiiiny bit. ]

I bet! He’s so competitive… He wants to properly race me too, since my high score was better than his.

[ By a second… ]

If something goes wrong, I’ll protect you, don’t worry. Either way, it’s probably safe.

[ Tugging on his hand… He’s excited. He wants to go on the ride so bad. ]

He wasn't too happy I beat him at skating, either. [Just wait until winter comes back around, and it's on again.

It's finally their turn to get into a cart, and while there are some rusty whines and grinds from it when they sit, it seems alright otherwise. Maybe not the cleanest place to sit, either, but hey. When it Rome, etc. etc. Raidou's curiosity outweighs his caution, and besides, he has Yuji here. When they sit, he slides an arm around his Yuji's, leaning against him, getting comfortable for the ride.]

That's right. If we get stuck up too high, I have nothing to worry about.

[Not that he probably couldn't climb down on his own, but this was more fun.]

[Raidou's curiosity sometimes gets the better of him. While this place isn't exactly filled with good memories for him, maybe it was time to replace them. He could only imagine what this place was like when it was fully operational, and a chance to see some of these strange rides and attractions in working order is very tempting. He's even managed to survive a ferris wheel ride intact!]

I'm honestly shocked anything here is able to work. How old are these rides at this point?

[Elan and Taryon are technowizards for getting anything to work.

Raidou beams when Bakugo says that about his baking.]

You think so? I made them with all dark chocolate chips this time.

[Bakugo has no plans on going on the ferris wheel. Even if the thing was solid enough to survive all these years, to him the ride looked like an invitation to breakdown at the most inconvenient time and place. It's not like he's got the best memories of Neo Tokyo theme parks now, thanks to that crap from earlier... Mah, maybe one day, this will be in a better state, and he can make better memories.]

Don't know. LILITH's never said when the kaiju started attacking.

[Five years? Fifty years? Three generations? How long does it take for a bunch of monsters to wipe out 4.3 billion people... Tch, better memories. They are here, and they're going to stop these fucking beasts.]

Huh. I noticed. [He takes another bite before canting his head and sending Raidou a small, but charming smug smirk.] That's why they're so good.

[It's a busy day, riding everything and eventually working up to the roller coasters, fixing the ferris wheel when it loses power, and writing down his notes and thoughts on the overall aesthetic of the park. Eventually, as he scribbling in his journal, Elan approaches him.]

Oh? Oh, well, I did the best I could. The whole thing wasn't too run down, so I was able to salvage the bulk of the rides. [He shuts the notebook and slides it into his bag.] We did pretty good, didn't we?

Are you not going to try any of the rides, then?

[You're not scared, are you?]

Though, I suppose you had been to a place like this where you're from.

[It's all new an interesting to him. When else is he ever going to get to try them?

Raidou looks so pleased that he noticed.]

I thought you might. I guess I've finally settled on the best recipe then.

I bet he made that super grumpy face, right? Like a dog that's growling at someone, but one of those tiny ones. [ Did he just call Bakugo a Pomeranian? Maybe -

Yuji is quick to hop in and sit down, and as soon as they're comfortable (Raidou's arm around him has his heart beating a little faster) he's kicking his feet out, turning to stare out the wide, open windows. ]

You want me to carry you again? It was cute when we climbed that tree.

Haa? These death traps, are you fucking with me?

[Oh wow. Don't you even dare, Shashou...]

Yeah, we have a lot of theme parks in Japan where I'm from. A lot are themed around heroes.

[Raidou's interest in the park isn't unexpected. It must all be new and exciting to him. He takes another bite, tongue pushing one of the morsels against his palate to melt it.]

Did you save it? [To make it again, obviously.]

Exactly. And after that it was closed for the season... He'll be waiting for his rematch for awhile.

[Teasing Bakugo is one of his new favorite hobbies.

Well, it's rusty, dirty, dark, and creaking disconcertingly, but it's moving. Better than nothing. Raidou's more than glad to have it. None of that impacts the beautiful view of the city, though, which is slowly coming into view, along with the occasional firework being set off by the Outsiders below.

Raidou leans his head on Yuji's shoulder, content as could be.]

... Only if you do it.

[He's been picked up and carried here a few more times than he would like, thank you very much. But Yuji is allowed. Only Yuji.]

He'll figure something else out. Basketball, or laser tag, or just running... Everything's a bit of a competition.

[ Yuji's body settles close to Raidou without pause, dragging him closer, warm and soft and all that he needs right now. He's not afraid of something like the creak of a machine, not after all the things he's seen, so he lets himself bask in this.

It's nice. Normal. He's missed that.

Turning his head a little, he presses his face against Raidou's gently. ]

Mm. I'll carry you any time.

[The site of the city from a distance is always novel to Raidou. He never gets tired of seeing it, and this is the best view yet. Those tall, gleaming buildings, all the lights...]

It's so different than the Capital, but... it's really beautiful, isn't it? It seems so peaceful from here.

[It's nearish to the top of the of the wheel where the ride comes to a slow stop, to give everyone a chance to have a change to enjoy the view. Had it come to a sudden halt, maybe he'd be worried, but just in case...

Raidou doesn't move far, just looking left and right for a moment, more listening for any sounds of distress from anywhere nearby. Seems fine.]

... Is it supposed to do that?

Well, we survived a ferris wheel trip, and that was probably the most dangerous one. [Considering how tall it is. It's fine, he was with Yuji. Had something terrible happened, he'd have gotten them out of there in (mostly) one piece.] But there are a few other things closer to the ground if you'd rather? [Is this teasing? An offer? A challenge? Who's to say.]
