[ to set the mood ]

[ dr. ratio finds himself part of the emperor's coven -- he will remember very clearly what he had to do join. only a select few were chosen, and he's had to prove himself through rigorous testing -- deadly traps with mazes, witches duels to the death. once he was left on the top of a mountain and had to find his way down. he was one of few to even survive. ]

[ he also remembers the past golden guard, an extremely powerful and intelligent witch who was his mentor when he was younger. he remembers having a strong bond with this man -- despite never seeing his face. he died under mysterious circumstances, something ratio has yet to find any details about, no matter how hard he searched ]

[ his successor is a child, who can't be older than 13, at the most. today, dr. ratio has been ordered to accompany this new golden guard on his mission and report back to the emperor about his progress. there have been whispers already about this new golden guard -- that he's unworthy ]

[ ratio and the golden guard are alone in this mission. it's to raid a supposed base of wild witches and return with their palismen --- sentient magical totems that can transform into a staff. ratio used to have one, himself, but it was taken by the emperor when he'd joined the emperor's coven. ]

[ the new golden guard beckons for ratio to follow him ]

[ It takes a moment for Ratio to orient himself after he wakes in the dream, memories that are not his swimming around in his mind. Such dangerous trials, pain and suffering, lives lost, and for what??

There is a young boy in front of him, no older than thirteen. He is to be the successor? He does not discriminate against age, but that does not mean he cannot take umbrage with the situation. A child on the cusp of his teen years should not be subjected to... to all of this.

It is but a memory, however. He cannot change the course of reality. So he stays silent, and follows when he's beckoned to by the young child. ]

[ it's easy enough for him to ignore, but he'll keep getting this nagging feeling at the back of his mind that this new golden guard is unworthy, and this feeling of resentment ]

[ the younger hunter, completely masked and covered, whips out his staff -- riding it like a witch might a broom. ratio will find he's in the possession of one of these as well ]

Now follow my lead. These wild witches are dangerous. I'll know how to handle them.

[ he sounds pretty self-assured for a little pipsqueak ]

[ It's a curious sensation, emotions that are not his trying to influence his perception of the events before him. Based on the memories he has obtained, the individual he has assumed must bear a grudge against this young boy.

Thankfully, his memories have also offered him instructions on how to use the staff on his person. Putting aside his concerns for the young boy, the whole experience has already been quite fascinating. He has never looked into the research surrounding memoria manipulation, but he should perhaps see what exists, and whether or not this experience, brought on by a malfunction of an implant, can be applied to it.

Anyway, now is not the time to be thinking of research. He nods silently and gestures for Hunter to lead the way. After all, his role was just to be an observer. That, he is already quite comfortable performing. ]

[ that, or perhaps hunter's mind is just projecting. mystery! ]

[ as they fly, ratio sees more of the world hunter hails from -- he will instinctively know that the this the the boiling isles, a place in the demon realm where the water is quite literally boiling. all the civilization of the isles is built on the skeleton of a fallen titan (their equivalent of a god). he will also know that the man the statue is made of is emperor belos, who 'he' serves ]

[ the world is full of fantastical creatures, as well, and all witches have pointed ears. finally, the two of them reach their destination -- Latissa, a port town. ]

Citizens. I heard tales of wild witches here -- where are they?

[ the locals ignore and kind of laugh off hunter, weirdly enough, but they look to ratio who they apparently consider to be an authority figure. ]

[ Despite the more fantastical nature of Hunter's world, there are some aspects of it that resonate with Ratio. For instance, the skeleton of the fallen Titan. Ratio is one of the leading experts on Natural Theology—that is, the study of the Aeons's effect on the universe. Of course, the fall of Aeons fall under his purview as well, and he can't help but try to make connections between this fallen Titan and what he knows of the Aeons.

He follows Hunter's lead, not expecting to have to interfere, but clearly he is mistaken when the locals turn to him instead, ignoring Hunter's status. He frowns irritably and crosses his arms. ]

Are you hard of hearing? You heard his question, did you not? If you intend to deem him as unworthy of the position, decide after you have seen his capabilities for yourself.
