πŸŽ‰ TANABATA FESTIVAL 🎊

WHO: Everyone in Neo Tokyo
WHAT: Tanabata festival! πŸŽ‰
WHERE: In the centre of the park
WHEN: 17/07 onwards
WARNINGS: N/A

NEO TOKYO TANABATA
aka operation festival funtime
As the middle of July opens, the streets outside of Neo Tokyo seem to get decorated almost overnight. Colourful origami banners hang from the trees, a mixture of tanzaku, kamigoromo, orizuru and toami.

For anyone who has been to the Sendai region in the midst of the Summer months, the decorations will look almost endearingly familiar; it's time for tanabata!
β–Ά 001. OPERATION: FESTIVAL FUNTIME.
The savvier of people might notice a particularly bright shock of pink hair running around in the early hours of the morning, taking part in setting up the decorations and putting together a basic layout of tables with tablecloths and various goods and prizes. Each decoration is hand made, and if you look closely you might see little golden traces throughout, giving a clue to who helped made these ones. There's something infectious about his enthusiasm and the delight, even as he gets a little more tired as the day goes on - there's nothing stopping him. Eventually, his section of the festival is set up; there are various stands, some for making decorations (bamboo branches with ornaments, more paper ornaments, origami, and various other cute and traditional arts and crafts), some space for you to take a break and have a fruity and always non-alcoholic drink and an area with a handsome backdrop for the taking of photos.

He's not alone, though!

Raidou's looking livelier than he has than in the last few weeks. He's helping the festival in an organizational capacity, while Yuji handles most other things. He sets up the stands, moves and directs supplies to the right place, picks out spots for decorations, and makes sure both vendors and visitors have everything they need. If you stop to ask him a question or ask for direction, you get a quick, polite answer before he flits off to the next task.

Once things are running smoothly, you'll find him working at one of the food booths, where he's frying up takoyaki and taiyaki. Raidou couldn't be more in his element - serving up fresh food and treats to the Outsiders and the community. You might even get your food handed to you from him with a smile.

At night, the festival is lit up with fireworks and sparklers throughout, lighting up the sky with explosions of little joy and happiness.

Throughout the festival, you can also get a free bento, delivered to you by a cute looking rabbit. The bentos come in many designs, cute, adorable or precious!
β–Ά 002. A DREAM IS A WISH.
One of the most exciting aspects of tanabata remains the wish-making. In the set-up for the festival, there are little posters left around near one particular booth (manned by local cryptid Choso) to explain the story of the festival and the meaning that it holds. Alongside it are an almost ridiculous amount of paper strips in various colours, left with some pens and calligraphy brushes for people to pick up and use. A big sign next to it declares the following:

Make a wish! If it's a good one, it might come true!

The directions are clear: write your wish on a strip of paper and hang it on one of the bamboo decorations. The harder you wish, the more likely it is to come true - and there are some prompts for the kind of wishes people could make, just in case you're strapped for ideas:
  • Academic or work successes
  • Prosperity or good health
  • Care and love for family and friends
  • Success in love or platonic relationships
  • Fulfilment of a personal goal or ambition
  • You might notice Yuji watching as you're tying your wishes up... Don't worry about that!

If you require further assistance in your wish-making (or even if you don't at all) Choso seems more than happy to lend a helping hand. When he isn't cutting up paper strips and sorting them out into strangely-organized piles (paper thickness instead of size or colour), he's preparing the calligraphy ink via manual inkstone grinding or offering an absurdly wide variety of coloured (and scented) markers for your convenience.

The strips of wishes can be as decorative or simple as you like, so don't stress about your artistic genius!

( ooc note: If you would like Yuji to take a shot at making your wish come true, please respond to this comment! There will be some RNG "granted wishes" that you can use in your top level and keep as a fond memory, but please note there is only one "granted wish" per character. )
β–Ά 003. AS THE POETS SAY.
In the centre of the festival, in the midst of a park with vibrant flowers, is a table where Yuji sits for a few hours at a time between breaks. He seems to be practically vibrating out of his seat, and when approached he launches into an explanation of this particular game:

    THE SOULMATE GAME!

The aim of the game is simple: you are given a ribbon at random with a number on it. Your mission? Find the person with the matching ribbon within a time limit of an hour and win a special prize. Don't worry though... If you lose, there's a prize for not quite making it within the limit. The festival is meant to be a celebration, after all, and Yuji doesn't want anyone to miss out.

Here's the problem: Yuji isn't making it easy for people to find their soulmate. He's not left a boundary for how far you can go (in case you were tempted to hide...) nor has he done anything to make the festival less distracting. This area is set up with your traditional festival games, such as (fake) goldfish scooping, ring toss and some chairs and tables set out for food and conversation.

To make it worse? Sometimes, Yuji might pop up and give you a hint to go in a particular direction, only for it to be a total red herring. This is definitely fun, isn't it? Who doesn't love a good chase? The problem is...

Will you find your soulmate in time...?

( ooc note: If you would like to win (or lose) at the soulmate game, please respond to this comment! Go ahead and OOCly decide who your character gets paired with and whether or not you win or lose - there are different prizes for each. You can play the soulmate game as many times as you want ICly, but you will only get one prize roll per character! )
β–Ά 004. TINY FRAGMENTS THAT REMAIN.
NOTE: THIS PROMPT WILL REFER TO THINGS THAT ARE SPOILERS FOR JUJUTSU KAISEN CHAPTER 264 ( refering to Yuji's powers and how he uses them in a fight ).

Here's the thing: Yuji wants everyone to have fun. His dream is that people are able to find some joy and peace in the midst of the darkness of the last few weeks, and so he sinks into something that is familiar to him - cursed energy, and his domain expansion. In the early hours of the second day of his festival, you might catch him making a hand sign before a ripple of powers hits, collecting around the area of the festival like a literal bubble. Anyone on the edge of the bubble will see it like a flickering, semi-transparent void, but there's nothing to worry about... Right?

The power of Yuji's domain expansion is simple enough, in theory: it transports into the memories, digs into the heart of what people want to show. His intention is to share the tanabata of his childhood with the people of Neo Tokyo and spark some joy for the Outsiders who have been through so much. He wants to show them something sweet and nostalgic, but he doesn't quite anticipate the side effect.

Outsiders who end up stepping into Yuji's domain will find themselves able to come face-to-face with their childhood selves, and enjoy the festival together. If they're together with another Outsider, those childhood versions of themselves (shaped in the way they remember themselves rather than how they actually looked!) are visible and shared, like an extension of their thoughts come to life.

It's still tanabata, but this particular part of the festival is influenced by what Yuji remembers from his youth, and Outsiders can find themselves seeing and being able to take part in various activities:
  • Crayfish catching (try and get the biggest or rarest one!)
  • Archery (can you beat your friends and get the bullseye?)
  • Horse riding (and you might hear Yuji commenting on how big their faces are)
  • Parades (are you going to join in?)
  • And anything else you can dream up! It's your character's childhood too, right...?
  • As soon as Yuji realises his mistake (at the end of the day, lost in his own memories) he brings down the domain, but it might be too late for some Outsiders who have come face to face with their more adorable versions. Whoops.
    EVENT BREAKDOWN (CLICK TO EXPAND)
    1. OPERATION: FESTIVAL FUNTIME: The festival is being set up by Yuji and Raidou, with support from other Outsiders to make decorations. Food and other entertainment is on offer for anyone who attends, but all drinks are non-alcoholic.

    2. A DREAM IS A WISH: Outsiders are given the chance to take part in the tanabata tradition of wish making. They can decorate paper with their wish and hang it up in the hope it will come true. Yuji will be granting one wish per outsider.

    3. AS THE POETS SAY: The "Soulmate Game" has characters being randomly assigned numbers and tasked with finding their matching pair to win a prize. They have an hour to find their partner and, win or lose, there is a prize for taking part.

    4. TINY FRAGMENTS THAT REMAIN: Yuji uses his domain expansion to bring Sendai tanabata to life, that has the accidental side effect of allowing Outsiders to meet and see their childhood selves. It also allows them to visit Sendai itself and take part in some other minigames that are not tanabata related if they want.

    01 β–Έ FESTIVAL FUNTIME

[ Yuta, appropriately dressed for the occasion and looking a lot less harrowed and drained than he has in quite a while, can be found moving around the festival with an apparent ease of familiarity that becomes all the more obvious whenever he notices someone struggling in any way β€” perhaps with making a decoration at one of the stands, maybe just looking confused or overwhelmed with the colorful change in surroundings, or at a loss with one of the games β€” and he appears to offer a guiding hand and friendly face. For all that the dark circles under his eyes are as ever-present as always, he is very clearly just simply enjoying himself for once, eager to come over and say hi to any familiar faces that cross his path.

Come catch a break with him, let him gently cajole you into making a wish, or let him teach you how to make an origami crane or the steps to one of the parade dances. This Sendai boy seems right at home with these festivities. ]

    02 β–Έ SOULMATE GAME

[ The game is not one Yuta would readily play of his own volition, but when it's his dear friend asking him to then what choice does he really have? There's nothing for it but to accept the ribbon and give it his all to try and track down his supposed soulmate. (Or maybe he should just learn to say no to his friends, but clearly that is not happening today.) So, he's rushing about, ribbon clutched tight in hand, approaching anyone he even mildly suspects to have one with increasing desperation the more the time runs down.

Maybe he's taking this a bit too seriously and is also a little too easily waylaid by any red herrings in his mad dash not to disappoint his kohai. ]

Ah, excuse me, do you happen to have the same ribbon too...?

    03 β–Έ TINY FRAGMENTS

[ Yuta is not alone inside of the domain, Rika is there to be his shadow as she so often is, wearing a kanzashi in the same shade as Yuta's eyes courtesy of Yuji. With them, too, are a young boy and a girl who is sporting the exact same engagement ring that Yuta is always seen wearing; the implications there clear to anyone who might have caught on to the domain's conditions. Yuta stays by their sides closely, acting as their chaperone as they move through the festival from activity to activity. The pair of children seem very intent on sticking together and utterly undaunted by the monstrous presence floating along in their wake. If anything, when they're not walking hand-in-hand with each other and/or Yuta, they are carried in the palm of Rika's hands, delighted for the height advantage gained. Any other child coming across them will be encouraged to come play or join any of the activities with them (the boy seems keen, the girl a little less so, but willing to indulge for the boy's sake) and will be reassured that the monster is quite nice, actually.

Yuta, for his part, seems content and in his element as the very picture of a doting, indulgent older brother leading them around, but he often hangs back to just watch them have fun. It's in moments when the kids are too engrossed to pay him any mind that his expression slips into one that paints his bittersweet heartbreak all over his face. Those familiar with grief can likely recognize it exactly for what it is. Maybe come snap him out of it before the kids can notice?

And if he's spotted getting a little nervous and jumpy any time the girl gets too close to a road... well, kindly no one comment on how quick he is to take her hand and shepherd her along, please. ]

    Ah.

( A lot in that single note, but for the most part there's just the very hesitant edge of guilt. ) We really have to stop meeting like this, Okkotsu-san.

( Getting a terrible insight into Yuta's life, he means. He pauses on the sidewalk, hands in his pockets, sunglasses now on his nose to hide his eyes. Despite everything that they talked about last time, the animosity seems to have faded in sight of the two young children, or possibly it's the open emotional wound on the young sorcerer's face. Either or. ) Cute kids.

( Friendly, he waves at the pair. )

Were you heading somewhere? ( Because Yuta's the only bitch who can percieve. ) I'll join you, mm? It's a busy street. Children are fast.

[ It probably says something that that particular familiar voice does not bring forth the wary tension that it used to. Instead of immediately snapping to attention, Yuta's head turns calmly towards the sound, eyes following a fraction of a moment later, delayed for the fact that he finds it hard to look away from the children β€” the girl in particular; old, unforgotten habit as it is to place her in the center of his universe to orbit around. Even Rika seems too taken with the little boy to pay Geto much mind. ]

Unfortunately, it doesn't seem like this place gives us much of a choice.

[ Mild and a little wry. It keeps happening and by now, Yuta feels almost resigned to it. There's little point letting it bother him by now. At least this time it isn't an enemy wearing his childhood friend's face, but a welcome, kinder facsimile of a ghost. He gives a hum of agreement at the comment. As strange as it is to see himself like this (was he really that young?), they're endearing to behold.

Where the boy returns Geto's wave with ready enthusiasm and a bright smile β€” sunny disposition a stark contrast to the gloom his older counterpart carries everywhere with him, a beaming sun overshadowed to be made into wan moonlight β€” the girl seems more reticent. In a blink-or-you-miss-it moment, she briefly narrows her eyes in suspicion before she politely smiles, an uncanny edge to both her gaze and the curve of her lips that's hard to pinpoint.

Yuta thinks to decline the offer of accompaniment, but doesn't. The company might keep him from slipping too much into melancholy and an additional set of eyes won't hurt. ]

We were just going to go see the horses.

( The young girl's suspicion does not alarm Geto, though he does blink at it. He's seen that kind of doubt on small faces before, and he knows it - probably isn't too personal. The boy's open encouragement is cute though. What a pair. They don't seem particularly troubled by the monstrous beauty of Yuta's normal companion either, which seems a good sign. )

    I like horses.

( He has no true feeling on horses, except -. )

We'll be careful. Once one tried to eat Mimiko's barrette. ( Voice cheerful and more pitched to children now that he's thought to join them, falling into step with the strange little group easily. ) Maybe they'll have something we can feed them, mm?
    copy: (0 9 6)

    [personal profile] copy 2025-07-22 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
[ It isn't anything personal (for once); it's a wariness she's always carried along with a dislike for older men and other girls in particular that is much easier to read on the young girl's face than it is in the lack of one of her monstrous counterpart. But between Yuta accepting this new presence into their entourage without fuss and the young boy's cheer, she seems fine going along with it. Having a monster at their beck and call helps, too. (Yuta isn't sure why they're not as alarmed as they should be β€” particulars of the domain, maybe, some sort of inherent knowing β€” but he's grateful for their easy acceptance when he doesn't want to find out if dismissing Rika will mean losing her younger self too.)

The claim of liking horses earns a mild raise of Yuta's eyebrows though his expression tilts more towards amused at the follow-up. He's only met Geto's girls that one time they came to the school and yet somehow it's all too easy to imagine that scenario and the indignant chaos that might have followed suit.

The young boy latches onto the latter statement, keen at the prospect, eyes on the newcomer even as he keeps gently swinging his and the girl's clasped hands between themselves as they walk. ]

Oh! Like apples? Or should we bring some?
    gorb: (cv.)

    [personal profile] gorb 2025-07-22 10:17 am (UTC)(link)
Or carrots! Maybe if we're lucky they'll be someone to guide us.

( It's an unfortunate affinity, Geto's fondness for small children. He ambles beside them, his gait even, his face creased into friendliness, uncaring for the presence of the older Yuta nor his ghastly girlfriend. He likes kids, sue him. )

Do you know they can sleep standing up? ( Horse facts with renowned curse user, Geto Suguru. He learnt them before he took the girls to the petting zoo, still prickly about people but adamant that his children would be raised with all the trappings of a normal childhood. ) And that sometimes they'll even prank each other.

( He glances the older Yuta's way, a wry little smile on his lips, a shrug rounding his shoulders. )
    copy: (1 4 0)

    [personal profile] copy 2025-08-19 02:25 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Little Yuta is all rapt attention, beaming at the mere thought of getting to feed carrots to some horses. He's only further enraptured by the facts Geto goes on to give, shaking his head at the question before his eyes go wide with intrigue.

It's all so painfully earnest, it might have been embarrassing to his older self if Yuta wasn't already struggling to reconcile this child with who he is now; the boy too different (too happy, too unmarred by tragedy), it barely feels like they're the same person. It's easier to see the boy for who he is: just a kid. ]

Really? How do they play pranks?

[ It's even managed to catch little Rika's attention. Although her face is a careful blank, she is looking up at Geto in understated anticipation of the answer, a subtle hint of curiosity even despite her inherent dislike for older men.

Geto's glance is met with a mild raise of Yuta's eyebrow, though the clear amusement lingering in the corners of his expression betray him. He remembers the little girls in their cage and he does not begrudge Geto this interaction. There's no harm in it. ]

    Tail-pulling, I think.

( He takes Yuta's silence as permission to continue, footsteps light, his hands in his pockets as he talks to the children. ) They like to sneak up on their friends and yank whatever they can, then take off at a gallop. A bit like playing onigokko. They're mischievous.

( He smiles, and it's strangely genuine. )

The two of you don't have anything interesting in your pockets do you? You might have to be watchful.

[ Rika is the first to notice the boy's hovering nearby, but she does not draw attention to it, content to keep Yuta's attention on just her until he musters up the courage to actually approach. Which, to her slight displeasure, the boy does. It makes her face go a careful blank when Yuta's gaze is drawn to the hovering figure now standing in front of him, staring with blatant curiosity and an encouraging smile. It's one that widens, joyous and unrestrained, at the shy offer. ]

    Sure!

[ Before the rod is accepted, Yuta is glancing over his shoulder at Rika first though. Her expression instantly transforms the second his attention shifts back to her, offering a smile and a nod when she's met with his radiant enthusiasm. It's all the signal Yuta needs to take the rod held out to him eagerly, beaming. ]

[ Little Rika's eyes narrow at the hand-taking, but she's already given her blessing and so she says nothing, remaining with her monstrous counterpart to saunter after the boys at a slight distance to where she can keep an eye on them and occupy herself picking flowers nearby.

The moment his hand is taken, Yuta's fingers close instinctively to return the grip and he hardly needs the tug, moving right along with Yuji readily. ]

    Grandpa...?

[ There's no elderly people in the vicinity that he can immediately see so it's a confusing statement, but it doesn't matter when he's almost immediately distracted by the exclaimed goal. There's a bright, easy response offered. ]

[ "Increasing desperation" is an understatement. She feels like she's spent more time looking for ribbons than actually having fun today. She just wants this to be over, but her pride won't allow her to just give up and admit a loss - not until the timer runs out. What a predicament. ]

    No...

[ She's so dispirited, she doesn't even recognize she's talking to the very person she'd said she'd like to meet in person. Maybe once she'll take a better look at him... Right now, all she sees are ribbons. Horrible, evil ribbons with the wrong numbers and colors. ]

He'd brighten at the recognition and the chance to finally greet her in person properly, except... she looks and sounds so despondent. That won't do. He's certain that Yuji would never mean to upset anyone with this game. For all that he might be taking it a little too seriously himself, it's meant to be just some silly fun.

His frantic desperation is promptly forgotten, expression morphing to one that is sympathetic and it makes the gentle curve of his smile a little wry for it. ]

I-I'm so sorry, I didn't even recognize you at first...! [She's the worst goddess ever.] Oh gosh, I didn't even finish rehearsing for when I'd meet you finally...

He has to pause and mentally backtrack to try and recall if he already came across someone with that number β€” it would make helping Ereshkigal a lot easier β€” but he's drawing an unfortunate blank just as the call of his name snares his attention. The thoughtful expression his face naturally adopted is quick to be replaced by a smile again at the sound of it, nodding his confirmation with a little more cheer.

Cheer thatβ€” doesn't falter, exactly, but there's some slight alarm at the panic that follows. And oh, rehearsing...? He can't help being reminded of his (slightly) younger self. ]

Ah, it's alright! Please don't worry about it.

[ Hasty reassurance accompanied by the raising of his hands in a soothing gesture. ]

Dire...? Ahβ€” it is a lot of pressure like this, isn't it?

[ He gets it. Sort of. Mostly he was just trying not to disappoint Yuji. Hopefully the fact that he participated at all will be enough. He only has a few minutes left now and with Ereshkigal here, he's more than ready to throw in the towel and turn his attention to his current company instead. ]

But yes, it's really good to finally meet you in person, Ereshkigal-san.

[ The statement is accompanied by a genuine smile and followed up with a polite introductory bow. When he straightens again, it's with a cheerful question that seems random and apropos of nothing. ]

    Do you like shaved ice?

    Yes, I'm only sad I couldn't--

[ Finish my preparations, but before she can finish her sentence she cants her head with curiosity. She's never heard of that before. ]

Shaved ice? [Is it another of those human delicacy? It's honestly quite impressive! There is technically everything humans need within a handful of basic nutriment, yet they have nearly developed more type of meals than there are humans on the planet.] Is it like ice cream?

[ There's a brief apologetic look at cutting her off and then a blink of surprise at her question, the urge to apologize promptly forgotten in favor of an explanation. ]

Oh, you've never had it before? Yes, it's made with plain ice shavings and given flavor with the use of syrups that you get to choose.

[ He brightens, smile returning a little wider than before, eager at the potential prospect of getting to share the joy of shaved ice with someone for the first time. ]

Please allow me to treat you to some! It can be something sweet to chase away the bitter taste of defeat... [ He's holding up his left hand with the ribbon to indicate it, expression briefly going wry, but he does not look at all upset about just giving up. If anything, he looks relieved. (The wedding band on the ring finger on that selfsame hand might be a good indication as to why.) ] Or it can be to celebrate us finally meeting.

[ It's a good(?) thing Ereshkigal is too intrigued by the prospect of shaving ice to notice the wedding ring, or else she'd start sparkling for totally different reasons. This goddess has turned out to be quite the prolific shipper, to the dismay of some (and the joy of others?)!

Regardless, the prospect of experiencing something totally new is enough to give her the energy she needs to put this whole ordeal behind her. No more ribbons, no more failure. ]

Or it can be both. I see no reason we cannot celebrate both things together.

[ She clenches her fists excitedly and nods most positively and... She sparkles. Quite literally, as if the light of the sun was shimmering off of her. Except that's not how people work, is it? Nor gods for that matter. It's best not to think too hard about it. ]

    Let us get going!

[ Quite a good thing indeed when the ring holds only a tragic story of an unfulfilled promise that would likely be a downer. The excitement for shaved ice is a much better mood booster after their failure. (Yuta will have to go apologize to Yuji later, at least he tried his best even if he's giving up a few minutes early.) ]

    Then let's celebrate both.

[ Easy, cheerful agreement no matter how strange celebrating defeat might be. What's stranger and more distracting is what happens next when Ereshkigal seems toβ€” sparkle? That definitely catches him off guard and has him blinking in both surprise and at the sudden sparks of brightness. ]

    Ah- right! This way.

[ Yuta's gesturing in the direction he'd seen the shaved ice stall in and turning to start guiding her that way and... okay, he's got to ask. He's too intrigued and hopefully it isn't too rude. ]

    Do all gods... do that?

[ The sparkling, he means. Muramasa is the most divine being he knows (to Yuta, personally) with his blank karma, lack of suffering, and the two divine spirits crammed inside of him, but he's no god so not a good point of reference and he's only met Tezcatlipoca twice. Who admittedly does not seem the sparkling type, but... well, it makes sense. Gods are often described as radiant, aren't they? ]
