[ no matter where you might be -- the metro, the shrine, your actual room? you catch a movement out of the corner of your eye and a blonde teenager is taking refuge behind a door, in a karaoke booth, a supply closet, or under your actual bed, etc. the list goes on. the stupider, the better ]

[ hunter catches your eye and has the audacity to make a "shh" motion at you. wow, what is he hiding from? what's got this kid so spooked he'll take refuge under the beds of other recruits? ]

[ it must be serious.... right? ]

[Is that someone hiding behind a shishi statue at the shrine? Raidou gives him a raised eyebrow, looking. around when Hunter gives him the shush gesture, wondering who or what he's supposed to be quiet about.

Raidou is dressed in traditional clothes and carrying a broom. Someone's got to keep the place tidy and it's going to be the newbie teenager to the shrine. He approaches quietly, noticing it's the boy he spoke with at the hanami party. Hmm.

He keeps his voice low.]

Are you alright?

[ yes it is, and he's very subtle about it, clearly. as a lock of his hair sticks out from behind the statue. and then a head. but, it's raidou! from the party! and he recognizes the seriousness of this situation (??) ]

I'm hiding. I can't let them find me...

[ his eyes flick around. he's clearly on edge about something ]

[Raidou looks back over his shoulder, but doesn't see anything out of the ordinary. A few shrine workers milling about, a few visitors making offerings.

After a moment of consideration, Raidou decides to join Hunter on his side of the statue.]

Who's them?

[ this is even more conspicuous. hunter ducks a little, trying to remain as hidden as possible!! scanning the area!! being very dramatic about it!! ]

That.... cat doctor thing. Or any of his minions!

[ okay so hunter just doesn't want to go to the doctor.... reverse vet.... ]

[He's hiding here? From Dr. Spim? He can't help but look a little amused.]

I don't think they're going to come for you here. Are you really that afraid of the physical? I've had to do several. It's not so bad. They mostly, ah, scan things and check the readings. Ask a few questions.

[It's a lot more convenient than doctors in his time, that's for sure.]

[ the truth comes out.... hunter is just being very dramatic about refusing his physical. clearly, there's no way he can be caught here, vaguely hiding behind a statue ]

I'm not afraid. [ sounding more than a little defensive, here!! ] I just don't want to do it. They're... nosy. It's too many questions.

How many times do they make you do this? [ several physicals.... his nightmare ]

I certainly am not thrilled about how invasive they are, no. I can't even say they're doing it in our best interests. But it's also better to be safe than sorry.

[He sighs at that question.]

I had to stay in the medbay overnight after the kaiju attack. After that they had me coming back every few days, and now only once this week. I... had gone through a lot electrical shocks during combat.

[Not to mention a ton of other injuries. He barely made it out conscious, and had to be rescued. He sure doesn't sound happy to share any of this, but maybe it's better to talk about it a little.]

They wanted to make sure there was no lasting damage. I've been given the all-clear now, though.

Sometimes I wonder.... [ but whatever he wonders about, he seems to forcibly stop himself from saying it, gripping his other arm instead. ]

[ also, despite his obvious shiftiness and irritation, his expression does soften a bit in concern when raidou says he's gotten multiple shocks ]

I'm glad you're okay.

[ in this context, it makes perfect sense to check up on raidou..... well, maybe not the fullbody scan ]

But they didn't do anything weird to you?

Thanks. [Raidou's used to getting injured, it comes with his job's territory back home, and he never shied away from it. This time was a little different.]

No, not that I could tell. Nothing out of the usual for LILITH anyway, I suppose.

[He tries to give Hunter a reassuring smile.]

You'll have to go back to the base eventually. Sometimes you wonder what?

[ he opens his mouth to answer the question, but decides against it. maybe another time, raidou.... ]

[ hunter is genuinely relieved that he's okay, though ]

So they're always too nosy and poke around too much?

[ a bit dryly ] I've got a plan for when I get back, don't worry.

[ it involves hiding under other people's beds ]

[He shrugs a little.]

To a degree I suppose. Whether it's genuine care, or they're just concerned about their investments, I can't really say. [Perhaps it's a little of both.] Maybe those of us with extra upgrades get an extra check to be sure everything is still in working order.

Perhaps just getting it out of the way would be preferrable than delaying the inevitable?

Well, we couldn't serve them very well if we didn't do our jobs to their satisfaction, I suppose... [ tilting his head ] What upgrade did you get?

[ hunter is still under the delusion that he can escape his physical...... good luck with that buddy ]

They'll have to catch me first.

[ and they will. ]

I got the healing upgrade. It was a... difficult process. I won't recommend it necessarily, but I am very glad I did it. I've been able to help so many people since getting it.

[That's all that matters to him.]

If you insist. Where do you plan to stay if not at the base?

I see. But you should worry more about yourself.

[ he wants to grump at raidou and complain that he's dumb!!! but... can't really bring himself to do that. healing people is helpful, after all. so there's just this half-hearted complaint ]

I can stay at the base, just.... different places.

[ he may have not thought this through.... ]

[Hunter would be one in a long line of people, both here and back in his home, that would really like it if Raidou would stop being so reckless with his own safety. But for him, other's safety is far more important. He can't help but smile a little sadly at the comment.]

I get told that a lot.

[Raidou does look at Hunter again though, and taps a finger against his own temple, near his eye.]

You do know that, if it comes down to it, they will know exactly where you are?

[Implants, friend.]

Maybe you should start listening.

[ he sounds annoyed, but it's completely born of concern. he meets raidou's gaze with a bit of a frown ]

.... I suppose. [ this is unfortunately a great point, and hunter then deflates ] Then I can keep moving until they give it up on it. How much are they gonna care about some examination anyway?

[ a lot, frankly ]

[He nods lightly at that. He and Yuji practically killed themselves in the last mission trying to keep the other safe. Things are much different here than back home, with no demons to fight alone side with, to power him up, to heal him. He has to act differently.]

I plan to. Next mission will be different.

[A little shrug for that question.] I think you're the first person I know to go this far to avoid LILITH. Though I don't blame anyone for not wanting to trust them.

[ though hunter himself has a streak of being self-sacrificing.... not that he's going to bring it up. he seems relieved enough that raidou's taking his suggestion. ]

It's not that. It's.... [ he seems to struggle with what he wants to say, and his expression goes very closed off ] ... Nevermind. I'll figure it out.

[Raidou knows that feeling all too well. He often struggles with forming his thoughts properly into words, and wondering if he should even bother sharing them. But if there is one thing he can do, it's listen.]

Are you sure? I won't tell them. Or, well, anyone.

[ hunter's expression softens a bit at that, though he still looks distant ]
