[ Luckily, Ratio is not the type to need coddling words to describe tragic events. And in his opinion, his feelings do essentially amount to angst; unproductive, and ultimately self-serving. That's why he's trying to do something—so it doesn't feel like he's wasting time.
But idleness has its purpose too, especially when one must reflect deeply upon themselves.
The scholar frowns as the roll of paper is pointed his way. ]
I am well aware of that. But such emotions aren't easily dealt with, even if you provide sound logic to counter it. Nor do I wish to callously discard them and become unfeeling when it comes to the loss of lives.
[ This is partially why he still hasn't dealt with his emotions yet. There is a due process that must occur when such events occur. He must continue to feel, and feel strongly. He can't let himself become anything like the members of the Genius Society. ]
Well, that’s why I’m not a fan of how this place runs things. Or the last one, for that matter. No offense, but you mortals aren’t meant to consider problems at this kinda scale. Wouldn’t call it discardin’ the feelings exactly, but…
[ He waves the paper vaguely as he looks up thoughtfully. It’s a difficult thing to explain, especially when his role is that of a mentor (albeit usually a harsh one). He doesn’t do straightforward answers, but he’ll lead people along the path to find one. ]
Jaded’s a word for it. This won’t be the first loss, after all. Seems to me that LILITH was just lucky to avoid casualties at this scale before now. Hell, I think it’s incredibly lucky that none of the Outsiders have died.
[ He thinks that debt will be paid in time, but that’s a different conversation, technically. He looks down again and shrugs. ]
But every loss you survive is still a win. Gives something. So, you got any takeaways from how things went down, doc?
[ Tezcatlipoca isn't wrong that humans are terrible at considering matters at a gigantic scale, but it still rubs him the wrong way to hear it said by a god. ]
I agree. Up until now, LILITH has only faced against one kaiju at a time, with each providing enough space for our recovery in between. I would not be surprised if, in the future, we encounter more kaiju simultaneously. Without knowing the limitations of the Rifts, we have no way of estimating what may come.
[ Luck, huh...? He knows it can't be attributed to Aventurine's luck, which only serves himself, but he thinks of the gambler all the same. At least that luck would keep him safe. Amidst all the losses suffered this mission, that reassurance is a blessing to Ratio.
Takeaways... ]
We are now aware that LILITH's tracking system has difficulty differentiating between the kaiju and its byproducts. Until they have rectified this disparity, it cannot be trusted. In addition, we've discovered that kaiju are intelligent enough to bear grudges. I suspect that is not the limit of their intelligence either.
[ The only reason they haven't shown any further intelligence must be because this planet is unable to mount a defense that would require complicated strategy on the kaiju's part. If this planet had barriers or energy based artillery, it would be a different story. ]
It may be possible to lure kaiju with suitable bait, but their target has always been humans. We cannot offer a good alternative to a large population of them, so the next option is improving defenses. However, it would require several years of research, development and construction to create defenses strong enough to withstand the kaiju's attacks.
I believe the only way to reverse humanity's inevitable decline is to obtain a breakthrough in Rift research. They are the source of these creatures. If we can limit their appearances, or at least better predict their appearances, that would provide us a better chance to defend against them.
