CONTENT WARNINGS: medical content

▶ 001. WELL DESERVED REST.

With no sign of upcoming city-level threats, LILITH has made the decision to provide Outsiders with a well-deserved break: there will be no official missions for the month of December. Outsiders are free to roam the city, continue their usual civilian jobs or take a holiday to any of the locations available via data portal. During this period, LILITH leadership will also be taking time off and any attempts to contact them will be met with an ‘out of office’ return email unless it is an emergency. (Dr. Spim is still around, but … he is a cat and doesn’t answer anyway... unless he feels like it.)

That isn’t to say it’s going to be a completely quiet month, of course. Our players have kindly prepared several player plots that anyone is welcome to join. Please refer to the top level here for links to the relevant plots. An updated quest has also been listed here.

Additionally, the Outsiders Program has successfully finished its first year! LILITH will be giving all Outsiders old and new a thank you bonus of 500,000 KRYPTOS (approximately 3230 USD) to spend freely on their holiday. Try not to spend it all on pachinko!

▶ 002. LET IT SNOW.

Starting December 1st, the temperature in Neo Tokyo will take a dive as the country enters into winter. The first signs of snowfall will occur on December 1st, and as it continues, the city will be transformed into a winter wonderland. The shops and restaurants of Neo Tokyo are capitalizing on the approaching festivities, putting up Christmas lights, Christmas trees and decorations. Many stores are having sales on warm clothing and popular gifts. Isn’t it the perfect time to find some nice gifts for your friends?

While only a suggestion, it is encouraged to support the integration of the orphans from Transylvania by taking them out on a winter adventure.

Winter activities found in Neo Tokyo include:

- Christmas Winter Illuminations. Certain parts of the city will be lit up in Christmas lights and holographic, winter-themed illuminations. Stop by at the right time and there might even be a drone show to watch.
- Ice sculpture building. Artists have gathered in Yoyogi Park to showcase their latest ice sculpture creations. Outsiders may view the attraction or join in on the ice sculpture contest. Winners will get prize money.
- Ice-skating. The Yokohama Red Brick Ice Rink is open again and characters are free to go skating with their friends. As a part of its latest attraction, the ice has been fitted with microscopic nanobots that light up when touched, causing the ice to glow or showcase striking colors as people skate across it.
- Playing in the snow. Even under threat of kaiju, the people of Neo Tokyo take the time to have fun when they can. Through the streets, there are people making snow angels or pelting each other with snowballs.

Characters may visit Las Vegas, Kyoto or Okinawa using the data portals. Kyoto and Okinawa continue to be uninhabited, but they can camp there if they wish. They are free to book a hotel and enjoy their holiday in Las Vegas too, where the city will have its own brand of winter activities (winter illuminations, Christmas shows, ice-skating and holiday-themed Vegas shows). While the weather is still cold, it will be snowing in Kyoto but not in Okinawa or Las Vegas.

▶ 003. SNUGGLE UP.

All the lights and festivities happening in the city are putting some strain on the power grid, and this leads to occasional bouts of power failure during the month of December. These seem to be happening in the base and throughout the city of Neo Tokyo, and they last for a few hours each time. With hospital equipment running on back-up generators, it isn’t a huge cause for concern, but it certainly is an annoyance; especially with the weather so cold.

LILITH robots will be offering Outsiders on the base extra blankets (traditional and emergency foil blankets) along with heat packs to get through the cold. Starting a fire within the base will not be allowed since it is a hazard, so those who still need the extra warmth will need to find other creative ways to obtain it. A snuggle never hurt anyone, right? There is one operational fireplace in the Library, and Outsiders may notice an influx of small tables throughout the base with self-serve hot beverages on battery operated kettles, such as tea, hot cocoa & artificial coffee. As Outsiders congregate around the base, snuggled up in their new festive blankets, perhaps now would be a good time for some classic party games such as Never Have I Ever and Two Truths and a Lie.

▶ 004. TAKE YOUR MEDICINE.

Dr. Spim takes regular cat naps anyway, so he doesn’t see the need to take a holiday. As a result, he has continued to work tirelessly on finetuning the cure for the vampiric disease. Throughout the month, he will make several requests for volunteers (those with and without the vampiric disease) to participate in the ongoing clinical trials.

The serum he is testing will not cause harm to the body, but it might result in any of the following side effects:

- Dizziness, fatigue and difficulty coordinating movement.
- Fever, chills and a desperate need for warmth.
- Mood changes, which can present as euphoric or depressed or both.
- Hallucinations or delusions.
- Increased hunger, thirst or other physical needs (interpret as you wish.)
- A ravenous need for blood (for vampires.)

Certain volunteers may encounter no side effects at all, while some may experience all of them. Luck of the draw, really. The side effects are not permanent and last for a few hours. As always, Dr. Spim will explain the possible side effects and get consent before administering the medicine.

By the end of the month, a stable cure will be finalized and LILITH robots will deliver it to all those affected by the vampiric disease (if your character was already a vampire, don't worry about it). It is highly encouraged to take the medicine! Dr. Spim has no time to chase down the people refusing to take their medicine, so he might pay some of their friends to do it for him. He is a cat. He has better things to do (such as knock this beaker off the table….)

As an OOC note, please do not let your character remain a vampire unless they are already a vampiric character. The vampire event in Transylvania was meant to only have temporary effect.

▶ 005. AFTERWORD.

Welcome to our third team building event! All tags on this log are worth 2 points and will count towards December AC.

We have a lot of player plots this month, and are using this log to encourage players to participate in the player plots since the event itself is light. As a reminder, the mod team will be taking a break during the month of December and will not be answering any questions at this time.

EVENT BREAKDOWN/RECAP (CLICK TO EXPAND)

1. WELL DESERVED REST: Outsiders enjoy a quiet month with no kaiju attacks, but are provided plenty of things to do (via player plots) and they are welcome to use the data portal to travel to Okinawa and Las Vegas at this time.

2. LET IT SNOW: Heavy snowfall turns Neo Tokyo into a winter wonderland with many snow related activities to participate in such as ice skating, ice sculpture making, etc. LILITH encourages the Outsiders to allow the misplaced orphans to participate in some of these activities.

3. SNUGGLE UP: The power outages strike again, this time from too many festive lights that overheat the generators. LILITH provides Outsiders with emergency blankets and hot beverages during times of outages.

4. TAKE YOUR MEDICINE: Dr. Spim trial runs an antidote for the vampiric disease that struck Outsiders during their mission in Brasov. He takes volunteers who are both vampires and not. Finally, a cure is made, and all Outsiders are asked to take it (please do not let your character remain a vampire unless they are already a vampiric character.)

nice to get off base, yeah. maybe a little. she didn't think about that part. most of her was focused on having a home for them to live. for them to invite people over just like her parents did.

Yeah! Will you help decorate it? Actually... what about getting a tree for the base this year? I was thinking about it. Like community tree for whoever wants to help decorate it and put presents under.

[ until the power goes out weeeeeeehhh ]

That would be really nice, actually. It's a shame we don't have the same kind of decorations around base. And it might help cheer people up?

( The twinkly lights certainly help Vash, already his mood is lifting. It's just a shame he doesn't have Wolfwood to show them too, but that's fine. Maybe when he gets home. He can make it a thing. )

And I should get one for the orphanage too, so the kids can decorate it! A whole bunch of them have been making paper crafts. The glitter. ( Gleeful, but also tinged with the edge that he now knows it gets everywhere. ) Maybe I could have them make some for base too, so that people get more used to the idea of the kids. Two birds!

Mm. That'd be nice if it did.

[ he noticed too, huh? who doesn't? it's like the atmosphere has progressively gotten more heavy around the base. decorating with things like this would help. right? something. ]

We can put presents under them, too.

[ for whoever they get presents for. hiyori already has THINGS in mind. ever since November. the air around vash was already much lighter than the last time they talked, too.

glitter. here, she laughs more brightly and openly. poor vash. but it sounds fun, too. messy. it all sounds good for him. or so she hopes.

since she's been worried. ]

Yeah! Definitely! [ MORE GLITTER. ] I think it'd be way better to decorate with handmade ornaments rather than buy some boring factory ones. They can do popcorn garlands, too.

( He would EAT a popcorn garland. )

I'll bring it up to them. Some of them really like crafts, so we have a whole room dedicated to it now. And thankfully none of them seem to mind reusing things? We made an entire fort out of cardboard boxes from the corner store down the street. A whole bunch are really clever with it too. So I'm sure if I asked they'd jump at the chance.

( A hum, mind whirring. )

We need lights though. Those are the best part.

[ VASH NO

with the story he paints, hiyori is quite inspired to visit the orphans again to see for herself. a whole room dedicated to crafts? sign her up.

SIGN HER UP for the nEXT FORT because a cardboard box fort sounds AMAZING??? and aren't they all kids at heart? she can be, sometimes. ]

You get mesmerized by it, huh? When I was little, I remember sitting in front of our family Christmas tree and just staring at all the lights for way too long, haha. I'd get in trouble.

There are so many experiences kids should have. Just like making cardboard fort boxes and making a mess with glitter. Decorating a Christmas tree. Getting presents... oh, speaking of! Hey!

What did you want for Christmas??

( He does a little jump at the question, a choking on his own inhale as he blinks at her from behind his glasses. )

N-nothing? ( Every so slightly vaguely mystified. He's done a lot of work making sure the kids have presents, and he damn well has a whole bunch for his friends, but the opposite hadn't occurred to him. Presents just weren't a thing. ) Everyone to have a good time, maybe? ( A cop out, but it's clear he means it. ) And to try all the foods Yato keeps telling me about. I think that's what I'm looking forward to the most.

( He shoves his hands in his pockets, smile going brighter. ) What about you? Are you asking for anything? Have you written a letter?

( And then 💡💡💡💡 )

Wait. Santa's absolutely not real, right? Like there's not a guy who goes down the chimney and brings presents? Because one of the volunteers told me I needed to read all the letters and see what the kids needed, so he can't be.

[ his first answer makes her frown a little. nothing? ah, he just hasn't thought about it. the second answer gets a mildly exasperated but soft look, too. it's a cop-out. for sure.

but, yeah, it's like vash to say that. does he ever want anything for himself? the THIRD answer, though!! that's a good one. hmmm, okay, foods. she can work with that! ]

N-no, I haven't written a letter. I haven't done that for years!

[ when she 100% believed he was real as a little lady. before she met gods and spirits. knowing what she does now? ]

W-well. Um.

[ HOW DOES SHE ANSWER THIS. honestly. of course. ]

........ One time I met a Santa backup. She said he was crazy busy, so she was helping out. Had a sack full of presents and everything...

( He blinks.

And keeps blinking. )

He's real? ( A little too loud, a little too excitable. ) What? Oh man, some of the older kids said he wasn't and anyone who believed in him was a baby and I was just trying to keep the peace because you know, it made a few of the littler ones cry! But I didn't know the Santa lore and we tell all sorts of things to children, right? So I wasn't sure.

( A beat. )

Does he really go down a chimney? Do I have to clean the orphanage chimney before Christmas Eve?!

[ hiyori opens her mouth to answer with an unsure "he... is...?" because she hasn't PERSONALLY seen the big guy but she's met gods, they both KNOW gods, and she met the nice lady that filled in for santa once upon a time. AND OK santa is TECHNICALLY a spirit of Christmas and she believes wholly in spirits...!!

but even if that weren't all true, she'd say he is because vash is SO EXCITED. like a kid and she can't ruin that. like yato's belief in capyper. ]

U-ummm?? [ at the end, she can't stop herself from smiling nervously at him. i mean, he should probably clean the chimney either WAY BUT. ] Yes? I think so.

You don't have to. What you do have to do is leave out some cookies and milk for him to eat as he leaves the presents for everyone. That's tradition.

No matter if he's real or not, but I think it's just more fun to believe in him. Those older kids, though, jeez. Someone should teach them some manners...

( Santa or no, Vash is determined for the kids to have a good Christmas. Which apparently even means defending the mean older ones. )

I get it. They've had to grow up really fast, right? And then some people don't see that, so they have to make themselves look real tough to compensate for it. They don't really have a place because they're not quite grown but they're not innocent anymore. ( He laughs, a little, rubs the back of his neck. ) I've sort of met all sorts of people, you know? You start to see the patterns. And I'm just glad no one's pulled a weapon. I'm happy it was just a silly argument.

( Maybe he should add a little more to that one kid's candy collection. )

I would've liked to tell Wolfwood about it though, you know? A saint with his name that looks after children. I think he would've gotten a kick out of it. ( A wistful sigh. ) The very first day we met there was a scared kid, and he was so kind. I think that's the first thing I really noticed.

( Of course, that kid turned out to be Zazzie, but Vash doesn't think that part is important. )

[ all of hiyori's frustration bleeds out of her quickly when he makes that point. STILL, it's not fair to take it out on the little kids. vash playing devil's advocate.

M-me too. [ she pauses, thinking of yukine. he was in that same situation. ] Someone needs to stand up for those little kids, though, Vash... even if you understand where the bigger kids are coming from. Maybe the bigger kids just need someone to talk to. Like you.

[ what would wolfwood do? not that vash is doing a bad job!! no he's doing great. those kids love him, she can tell. it must be hard for everybody in so many ways. it's frustrating.

saint with his - oh. she feels a small smile tug at her lips. ]

What else did you notice?

I try, though I'm not sure I'm doing anyone any good.

( Doubt is an old friend, and Vash has spent years moving. Being in one place and seeing the impact he makes is a strange thing, harder than he expected. He wants to help though, that much never changes. ) I'll talk to him then. Maybe try and figure out a way to redirect. Sometimes they just need something to do, right? It's what I did when I was by myself for the first time.

( The last question has him hum, distracted. )

His eyes. ( A beat. ) Not like that. ( And then another, sheepish. ) Okay, maybe a little?

( They're still wandering arm in arm, so Vash feels okay with leaning in closer, more conspiratorial. It's not really a secret, but it feels nice that it's just Hiyori. )

He was trying so hard to look tough. Wolfwood's like a cat. You know how they puff up in size to make them look meaner? He wanted it so badly. I think he thought maybe if I thought he was a cruel guy it would go easier. I'd come with him faster. But I could see it in his face. His heart. It was right there from the very beginning. So I liked his eyes. ( A laugh, low, a little bittersweet. ) He'd probably get real mad at me for saying that. Any time I was nice he'd start spitting.

I'm sure. You are.

[ since they're arm in arm, she gives his bicep a small squeeze with her hand after saying so.

doubt comes for them all, but hiyori is steadfast and loyal with friends. among vash can count himself as one of the best she has. explaining his plan of action gets her nodding. ]

Yukine-kun was like that. [ she finds herself saying, finally. ] He was troubled. Young. He took out a lot of anger on Yato... and me. But I knew he was a good person, he deserved another chance. A way to redeem himself. Maybe you can give him that...?

[ hopefully, that boy is the same too after vash talks to him. he sounds about yukine's age. maybe he just needs to talk. someone to pay attention to him and see him. he exists, he's alive, he matters. people care. vash cares.

sheepish vash saying wolfwood's eyes are what he noticed makes her blink at him in shock before she grins knowingly. oh yeah, she totally gets that. then, she chuckles and looks curious from him leaning in. after a pause, she leans in a bit as well to hear better. to play along.

but by the end, hiyori's heartstrings are thoroughly tugged. ]

You know, cats are also just big cuddlebugs. [ ... ] You always see the best in people, don't you? But, to you, Wolfwood - no, Nick was the best.

Who's Yukine?

( Curious, but without any pressure behind it. She can tell him, or she can not. It's just another part of the tapestry of Hiyori-and-Yato he's peicing together. )

And I try. ( Seeing the best in people. ) Wolfwood gets mad about that, actually. It's a little funny. He'd prefer I was more suspicious of people. I just think they all deserve a chance, you know? He did. ( He chews on his bottom lip, thoughtful. ) Anything Wolfwood's ever done is to protect the kids of the orphanage. His orphanage, the one he's from back home. He went through so much just to try and keep them safe. He thinks it makes him a bad person, but I don't think that's right. I think he didn't have much of a choice.

( A sigh, but it's only a little mournful, not quite sad. )

My brother sent him to fetch me. I knew from the minute we met. I always know. But I could tell he was a good person, I knew Nai was holding something over his head. I kind of wish I'd talked to him about it when he was here, but I didn't want to hurt him, you know? So I'm trying to make it up to him now by keeping the kids here safe. I hope he's back home now, I hope he's free from my mess, I hope he's happy.

[ she smiles wryly because she understand wolfwood's side lie it's her own. it's nice to believe the best in people, but you also can't trust every single person you meet, either. not until you get to know them a little, first.

... but she likes vash as he is, too. believing in the best of others and giving everyone a chance. she'd bet some serious money that wolfwood thinks the same deep down, no matter how mad he gets. and hiyori isn't even a gambling TYPE.

from the sound of things, wolfwood is a protector. not just of kids but of other humans, despite his reservations. he's a good man, not a bad person. she's with vash on this one.

hiyori looks shocked that his brother used wolfwood to get to vash, eyes dropping down. vash's story reminds her so much of what she experienced on the far shore. the feud between yato and his father. how his father used everyone and everything to get to him, to get him back to his side.

it sounds like he was using the orphanage, innocent lives against him. just like yato's father did at the iki hospital.

... did yato and vash ever talk? ]

You two are so alike sometimes, I swear. [ hiyori mutters to herself, frustrated but fond. then, she hurries around to his front and grabs his arms to look serious. ]

Do you trust Wolfwood, Vash?

With my life.

( Instinctive. He would though, has. Willingly put himself in to Wolfwood's hands even though he knew what was waiting for him at the end of the road. It didn't matter how it would finish, only that the undertaker would get him there. A lot of it changed on the journey too, once they stopped snagging themselves on each other's sharp edges. A lot of it became softer. It makes missing Wolfwood a lot harder, but he's still glad there's something to miss. )

We don't always believe in the same things, you know? He doesn't agree with my ideals. I don't like some of his choices. But at the end of the day I know who he is, and I know he'd do the right thing, and I can't not trust him.

( Maybe Nai made a mistake there. Gave Vash something to fight for. Or maybe he knew exactly what he was doing. Who knows? It's not like he'll get to go home and find out. )

[ also she did not forget to talk about yukine she will GET BACK TO YUKINE. the fluffiest boy... the goodest... a gentleman and a scholar!!!

right now, she needs to make a point. a smile flashes on her face, briefly, as he explains. they're two different people but, like he said, they know who they are. they know the other's heart. ]

Can you trust him with your heart? If you can do that, even if it will hurt, you'll overcome it. Nick deserves to know how you feel, and you should be able to talk to him about anything if you have that trust. First and foremost, as friends.

Not only that, but trust that he doesn't consider what you're going through a mess. If he's as good as you say, if he knows to do the right thing, it's to help you. And, I don't know if it's all that comforting... I don't know if he could be happy without you. He could try, but something would be missing.

( Embarrassment flares. So too does a deep ache. Vash toes the front of his boot through the snow, head ducked. )

Hiyori.

( A vague whine, almost childish. It's maybe the teensiest bit of an act, considering how Vash is. ) He's not even here, and my heart's fine. ( It's not, it's maybe in a billion little peices. But it's been that way since he was much, much younger. ) I got lucky, getting to spend time with him outside of our world. I don't think it's going to happen again. And I have to be okay with that. I wouldn't want him here anyway, he cares so much about people back home it wouldn't be fair.

( Wolfwood did everything for Hopeland. Vash has to tell himself he got it back. Otherwise what would be the point? )

And besides, I'm good.. It's better to have something for a little while than never, right?

[ aw, vash!!! ]

Sorry! I'm just - I... oh, screw it.

[ act or not, she's wrapping him up in a hug. as soon as she hears that his HEART is fine. there is DEFINITELY a squeeze that he thinks it won't happen again. that his heart is so so so selfless because

she thinks he doesn't know how to be selfish at all.

cheek pressed to his chest, she furrows her brow. ]

Yeah. [ there's that whole saying that it's better to have loved than lost. her grandmother, too, pushed her before it was too late. then it WAS too late and

and ]

But I can't help but think that you're putting up a tough act and saying you're okay because you think you have to, though. Because you're used to it... losing things...

I don't want that for you.

( The play-pretend fades, Vash left to blink down at the top of her head. If his eyes are a little wet then he can't really be blamed for that, he thinks. When was the last time he was hugged like this? It feels nice. And she's so kind. )

I don't think I know how to keep things.

( It's out of his mouth, quiet and helpless, more child-like than his whine from moments before. His arms come up, to hug her back, something shuddering in the tips of his fingers. The worst thing is he doesn't think he'll ever know how to. Even if his life didn't kill Wolfwood, even if the other man survived it all despite everything, time would come for him in a way it does not for Vash. )

I don't know how to get any of it to change. ( But what good is questioning it? What could he do? He has to survive. ) I am okay though, Hiyori. I really am. I have to be. You really don't have to worry.

[ feeling him return the hug makes hiyori tighten her arms just that little bit more. she's much smaller but her hugs are all-encompassing. ]

I believe you if you say that you're okay, but I'm sorry. I care about you, so I'm going to worry anyway.

[ that's just how it IS with her. ]

I might have a solution, though.

[ though she keeps her arms around him, she loosens them enough to lean back and shoot him a small smile, looking up at him from his chest. ]

You let the world keep you, instead. [ and though she keeps this to herself, she's going to keep him. personally. he's one of her very good friends. you're not slipping out of her grip that easily.

after saying that, she grabs his hands, both of them. squeezing them between hers in an unsaid promise he doesn't know she's making to herself. then, she pulls off her earmuffs and plops them on his head. ]

( Ah.

He loves her too, he thinks, in that dizzying way he likes to gather people up and paste them over the cracks in his heart. Vash hadn't thought he'd be lonely here, but he hadn't expected to find himself friends like Hiyori, and like Yato, people who care about him even when he's not particularly doing anything heroic, even when he's just sad. It makes him hitch a little breath, vaguely wet. But the smile his face blooms into is genuine, going pleased and sweet when she puts the earmuffs on his head. )

Yeah, yeah I'd like that. Take one with me?

( He'll put it up beside his one of Rem and Nai.

But first-. ) Thank you, Hiyori. You really are helping me a lot, I want you to know that. I'm so glad we met. I'm so glad I get to be here and get to know you. You've made all of this so much more easier.

[ like he has to ask? ]

[ moments away from hooking her arm back into his and skipping them to the tree, she stops at his gratitude. for a woman who doesn't really understand her purpose here among the Outsiders, it's

really nice to hear. validating, maybe? it's her turn to hold back the urge to cry. if she starts, she doesn't know if she can stop. they glimmer in her eyes anyway and she curls her fingers around his hands, pulling them close to her heart. ]

Me too. I'm glad we met and became friends. So glad. [ that she can help someone she cares about. if it's just by being herself.

maybe this is what ereshkigal meant. what yato is always telling her when she gets down on herself, sometimes. before the tears can slip free, she reaches up and wipes at her eyes and flashes him a brilliant smile. ]

You've helped me, too. Many times. When I thought I couldn't smile, you made me laugh. Don't forget that, okay? [ finally, she hooks her arm back in his and tugs at it. ] Let's go? After taking pictures, have you ever had a snowball fight? I know you're good at aiming...!

( They're both emotional saps, truly. But Vash doesn't mind a little bit of crying when it comes from something good, and so he lets her wipe her tears without panicking, beaming in response as they make their way to the big, beautiful tree. )

Oh, I'm so good at aiming. If I were to get into a real snowball fight I think I might need to get some sort of handicap, so I didn't ruin the game. Though maybe my bad luck would even it out.

( He'd fall face first into something, he's sure of it. )

[ HER VASH AND YATO. saps. what a little trio they've made. as they walk, she manages to laugh. not like it's all that hard with him. ]

We can tie your wrists together? Or blindfold you! [ she aims a grin at him from his arm.

bad luck...? ]

Oh, right! You asked about Yukine-kun. Hmmmm, I think Yato would be the better person to ask but... Yukine-kun is Yato's shinki. His guidepost. He's a boy, about fourteen with the fluffiest blond hair. Small for his age, though. I thought he was a lot younger when I met him. He's my friend. [ here, her eyes go soft as she stares at the snow beneath their feet while they walk closer to the big tree and the dozens if not hundreds of decorations and lights. ]

Yato, Yukine-kun, and I... went through a lot together. Those two changed my life.
