The Games.
For those that remember the question posed on the network nearly two months ago, now is about the time that Taryon promised to put together a splendid party centered on games played around the table. A "board game" party, if you will.

And if you forgot, then a large sign with "BOARD GAME CLUB MEETING SPONSORED BY TARYON DARRINGTON STARTING 3PM AT THE LIBRARY" on the residential floor will inform you.

The upper floors, thankfully, was not as damaged as the lower portions of the base, leaving enough space for Taryon to add two more foldable tables from storage and additional chairs. There is a deck of cards and few simple board games stacked on one of them: chess, checkers, Battleship, Monopoly (please be civil, Taryon might cry if you lose the pieces), and the like. There are also a few newer boxes with more complex rules for those into games involving tracking multiple resources and cards Taryon already has a set for Settlers of Catan and Risk prepared from the very start

A small table (actually, a repurchased stand) is reserved for the Mahjong players. Doty, the automaton, has been ordered to stack them neatly facedown into a pristine cube. If he weren't a machine but for precision, it would be superhuman impressive.

On a separate table are the tabletop role-playing games. In the past, Taryon has donated to a kickstarter for a small-scale roleplaying game...that is completely forgot about after he died. Its arrival in the mail came to a surprise, and he had to read the clumsily written rule pamphlet twice to get a handle for the gameplay mechanics. Or roleplay mechanics, seeing as there is a system for rewarding players that have a conversation about pre-determined topics. Hopefully everyone will agree on how it's played. Otherwise, there's some good old-fashioned Dungeons and Dragons oneshots he'll be happy to DM.]

The Refreshments.
He didn't order any heavy meals, but Taryon and Doty made a long snack run at the nearby convenience stores to buy drinks and snacks. As much as he would have loved to bring wine, by the time he bought ten varieties of daifukus, he realized he went over his food and drink budget.

He hopes no one complains about the lack of sustenance, although a few hours into the games, he stands up from his seat: "Not that I'm hungry or anything, but if anyone wants to chip in with some money, I can order something!"

Whatever cheap food they get, one can eat it either during a game or while relaxing in other parts of the library - or they can just read a book and try to deal with the noise of victorious and defeated players.

I back way the hell up. [He'd done enough damage from close up, hopefully.] And I fire on it again with my bow. Does a... ten hit?

Not even with your procifiency bonus. [He shakes his head solemnly.] But...as the wyrmling deftly dodges, the guardsman gets a hit on its rear flank! It pierces the scaly skin for seven damage.

[He nods excitedly as he marks down more damage for the monster.]

It twists around to bite the man who just attacked it. It clamps his mouth around his torso for nine piercing damage and three fire damage. He looks badly damaged, not dead, but close to it.

I, uh... [Ratchet squints down at his sheet, then is taken by a vision.] Wait.

[He scans the paper again, tilting his head.]

...does the wyrmling's mouth count as an open container?

I...suppose? It's got an esophagus, so it's kind of not really a container?

[He looks over the brief monster entry in his folder.]

What are you trying to do?

I want to cast Create or Destroy water in the thing's mouth so it'll stop breathing fire and spit out the guard. I can create up to ten gallons of water within range in an open container.

[He looks actually excited about this, which is a deeply unfamiliar expression on his face.]

Is that allowed?

[Taryon rests his face on his palms, reviewing the spell, going back to the list of definitions, checking the wording of the requirements.]

So...it says that it can be created in an object, not a creature. The wyrmling isn't an inanimate object. However...it says you can turn this into a cube 30 feet wide of rain, so you could also extinguish some of the flames. It won't damage the beast, but it would clear up some of the pathways leading away from the street.

[He stops himself before he speaks of another idea - he'll have to see what Ratchet comes up with.]

Aww. Okay then. [Ratchet sits back, tempted to argue, but it's not like he has any idea how to play this game and apparently it's real where Taryon is from so he keeps his mouth shut.]

I... shoot it again then, I guess, aiming away from the guard in its mouth. A fourteen hits, I think, so... seven damage?

You're exactly right, seven damage. It winces and pries itself off the guard, who...

Oh. That's a critical miss. He, uh, trips and doesn't hit the wyrmling. It now tries to attack him while he's on the ground and actually bites him for nine piercing damange and three fire damage. He's unconcious.

How is your character faring? Is she going to call for help? Hide? Run over to heal him? The wyrmling looks pretty banged up, and its mouth is starting to glow with a renewed fire.

Huh. Is there more help to call for? I have one spell slot left, so I can heal him or maybe cast Inflict Wounds again for a lot of damage... do I get the sense that another fifteen damage or so will take it out, or do I not know?

You don't have the ability to tell how much health it has, so you don't know if it'll take just one more blow. And yes, there are some guardsmen and civilians coming out to put out fires and look for any stragglers, although the flames on the street make navigating the small alleways difficult.

[A shrug.] It's up to you to decide what your elf will do.

Okay... okay. I call for help and run towards it again--I kind of try to get behind it? I put my hand on it and cast Inflict Wounds again. That's a... seventeen. And I do exactly fifteen damage.

[He looks up at Taryon hopefully.]

Is that enough to get it?

[Taryon hums, considering his options. It wouldn't be fun to have the adventure end right here, so he quickly comes up with an alternative outcome.]

It wobbles, weak but still alive. It glares at you, the one person still standing. As it rears back for a final attack, you hear clamoring down the main street. "There's a healer there! We have to get her to safety!" Some of the guards, including some people that you helped earlier in the day, have spotted you and are running your way. They fire several arrows at the wyrmling, not necessarily killing it, but distracting it from attacking you again. You have another chance to fight it or to help someone else.

I fire on it again. [There's grim determination in Ratchet's voice.] And a... oh. Seven doesn't hit. That's embarrassing. Can I use my movement to go over to the injured guy behind the fountain? I'll check him out on my next turn.

Yes, you can do that. The guy by the fountain looks pretty happy about this turn of events. The wyrmling and the archers continue to throw volleys at each other. It breathes fire in their direction, but they are able to dodge it with minimal injuries.

It's your turn. How are you going to help the man by thr fountain?

Uhhh. [Ratchet looks down at his sheet again, helplessly.]

I used all my spells on the dragon... what else can I do for him? Can I just do regular medicine?

You can. Roll for medicine and that will tell us how much you help him to be able to walk.

Oh, I have a lot of points in that. Uh... I rolled an eleven, but that makes it a fifteen. Do I stabilize him okay?

You do! This time, he raises himself to kneel, and bows. "Thank you, milady. I may not be able to fight this foul beast by your side, but I can offer you my gifts." He holds out his bag, which is full of potions. He's a local alchemist with some healing and harming potions! You can grab three: there's health potions, spell slot restoring potions, and vials of acid.

I take two health potions and a spell slot restoring potion. ...can I drink one of the health potions right away? I'm still pretty hurt, I think.

I'll allow that as a free action. You're healed to full strength. In the meantime, the new people are next in the round. They fire arrows at the wyrmling, damaging it further, and the wyrmling bites one of the warriors. He's still standing, but looking bad.

What a mess. [Muttering.] I drink the spell slot potion too and run back towards the wyrmling. Can I make it there in one turn?

You certainly can. And as you run, the guards...

[He rolls the die: a 20.]

Critical hit! One of them brandishes his sword and slices a mighty gash on the front leg of the wyrmling! It thrashes, and in its blind fury, misses its next attack.

I hit the side of the wyrmling and cast Inflict Wounds one more time... a seventeen hits. And I do eighteen damage. And I use my bonus action to--oh, I can't cast two spells in one turn, it looks like. I guess I just do that, then.

No, no, if you have an idea on what to do, tell me. Otherwise it's just a wasted bonus action.

I wanted to cast Healing Word again, but I already did a spell by casting Inflict Wounds. I don't think I can do another spell as a bonus action when I've already done one, I have to hit it with my bow instead.
