Accidental Valentine's Dinner

Everyone could use something nice after that kaiju fight, and what better than a real meal? It won't be easy to cook for so many people, but Raidou is willing to try. He makes sure to get permission to use the kitchen and the commons space, and recruits a few friends to help get it all together.

It's not an easy feat to get all the ingredients together, especially in the aftermath of a kaiju attack, so it won't be the most resplendent meal the Outsiders ever had. But if nothing else, he can make the broth and noodles for some ramen, and get as many vegetables together as he can to fill it out. It takes him several days to make what he hopes is enough, and hopefully no one raiding the fridges will take any of it in the meanwhile. He's not the world's greatest cook, but this surprisingly domestic devil summoner is good enough to make something delicious. It's not like Narumi was ever doing any of the cooking back home, so someone had to do it.

Early on Wednesday, everyone would have gotten a text saying that dinner will be at 1900 hours in the common area, and he comes straight home from school to work on putting it all together. Anyone is welcome to help cook or set the tables, and once it's ready, people can line up to get a bowl of their own to take. People are also welcome to bring their own food or drink if they have any they want contribute. Who's got dessert?

After dinner entertainment will be provided by Yuji Itadori, who has managed to find a small projector to use on the commons wall. All the tables and chairs will get rearranged to cram everyone in. Get close, okay? The first feature will be a comedy, and the second will be a horror movie.



OOC: Happy Valentine's Day, Outsiders. Raidou only just learned today what that is, whoops. If your character doesn't have any hot dates planned in a city recently smashed by monsters and tsunamis, then drop in a top-level comment, have a seat and enjoy some soup and some team bonding. Check up on your teammates after their first big battle.

[If you want to help in the kitchen, Raidou is busy stirring, chopping, and pouring, and you might have to try a few times to get his attention. In typical fashion, he gives a slight bow in apology for his rudeness, and is grateful for anyone who wants to help.]

▶002. Commons
[Of course, Raidou will be serving himself last, waiting for everyone else to get their fill first. By the time most people are finishing up, he's finally sitting down with his own ramen bowl.

He might not have had time to make dessert, but at the end of one table is what looks to be some Valentine's Day chocolates. Raidou got handed them by some girls at school, having no idea what it was all about, since he's about 30 years out from it ever becoming a thing in Japan. While he does have a sweet tooth, it seemed only right to share. A few still have cards attached, made out to his civilian name, Johei Narumi. Feel free to have some, or maybe tell him he's being rude to these lovely gifters!]


▶003. Movies
[Raidou can count on one hand how many movies he'd seen in his life before getting to Neo Tokyo. He's still getting caught up culturally, so a lot of the jokes sail right past him. While others are laughing, he just blinks a little.

It's not much different when it comes to the horror movie. Raidou is impervious to all these ridiculous attempts at scares. This boy is too cold for his own good. If someone near by him jumps or screams, he leans over and whispers quietly.]

... Was that really that surprising?

[This is not sarcasm. It's never sarcasm with him.]

[ Yuji, for his part, also isn't that scared by the film - the horrors of reality far outpace anything that fiction could come up with. It means he ends up sitting beside Raidou, leaning back in his chair and sighing softly. ]

Maybe I should've tried to find Human Earthworm...

[ What a horrifying statement. ]

Are you enjoying it even a little, Johei?

[Raidou blinks at that title, trying to imagine that.

He looks back to the screen, thinking about it. It's always hard to tell with Raidou, with his neutral facade, if he's ever enjoy a lot of things. Two months in and no one here would have ever heard him laugh.]

... The story is interesting. But you could tell that ghost was going to be behind him...

[Jump scares have no effect on him.]

[ It's a true romance story...

Nodding, Yuji lifts his hand and points. ]

You can tell who's gonna live, too. That person has all the traits of someone who won't die at all.

▶001. Kitchen

Oy, Shashou. Where'd you put the carrots and potatoes?

[While he had intended to spend the post-kaiju battle recuperating, an alternation of rest and training, as well as writing down notes and reviewing the battle + talking with scientists, someone had another idea. How the hell does the stoic guy with zero emotion manage to piss him off guilt/challenge enough to pitch in for shopping and preparations?! Who knows. Either way, Bakugo's among the ranks enlisted to help. It's not like it's any different from Everlight being in charge of the soup kitchens after the tsunamis.]

Shashou! [Seems that finally got his attention. Bakugo's all glares when the summoner turns around to address the question. Ugh, formal bow and everthing.] Didja go deaf? Tch. Carrots. Potatoes. Where?

[He's already got a cutting board, knives, and bowls over at the table to start working on the roots once he gets their location. Just cause he helped procure them doesn't mean he saw where Raidou and Yuji put them away.]

Oh, I--

[Raidou rummages around the counter until he spots where the vegetables got covered up by a tossed kitchen towel. He brings the bowl to where Bakugo is standing and sets it down in front of him.]

Here. Sorry, I was-- focused.

[Bakugo slides the bowl closer to him and pulls a carrot out to make sure they've been washed off first. At least that step was taken care of, so no yelling about that. Cause he would have.]

If you're gonna run this, you can't get distracted.

[Dinner Leader-san. And proceeds to make instant expert work on the carrot. It's like a fucking dicing machine.]

Did you hear back yet about whether we can eat the kaiju meat?

[ There are plenty of people cooking, so Nanami doesn't mind limiting himself to small tasks and organizing the dishware so people can get food more easily. He even buys some toppings that they can easily prep and share with the group so everyone can pick out what they like.

While Raidou is cooking, he comes to check up on him, finding him while he's preparing some of the noodles. ]

You should eat too. I can take over for a while.

[Raidou looks up from his work for a moment, blinking at Nanami, before taking a quick look around to see where they were at in the process. Enough people have shown up to help that things went faster than he anticipated.]

Oh? Are you sure? Have enough people gotten theirs?

[Because of course everyone else should get their serving first.]

[Raidou once again is focused entirely on his service, not taking any breaks. It's a good gesture, but a kid shouldn't be that worried about everyone else. You only get to be young once. Nanami steps in and pushes Raidou aside, shouldering him out of the way.]

Go eat. Rest. Stop worrying about it. I'll take it from here.

[He can't stand the overly responsible and worrying nature of the young man. Probably because it's too nostalgic and in the end only left him alone.]

001. KITCHEN SHENANIGANS.

[ Yuji is having a field day in the kitchen.

When he and Raidou had talked about setting up this little event, his first thought had been something easy to make en masse - and that had been ramen. The idea of being able to sit around and cook, to help people feel better after the first mission was undeniably fun for him, so he threw himself into it without hesitation. He's not necessarily the best cook in the world, but he's doing his best, and that's what counts.

Moving around the kitchen, he focuses on the noodles side of things, squinting a little at a giant pot filled with them as he leans close. ]

... Might need salt?

[ Probably needs salt. ]

002. COMMON ROOM.

[ Anyone paying attention to Yuji might notice that as he walks around the room he has the slightest little limp, a touch of hesitation in leaning on his left leg, but after a few moments he realises it and starts to walk like normal. Huh.

If you're someone who Yuji knows - or even just someone he's spoken to once - he'll come up to you to hand over a little wrapped up heart-shaped chocolate, his expression bright and happy as he hands it over. ]

Happy Valentine's Day!

[ Even if girls are meant to give out chocolate on this day... Will people even celebrate White Day here? Better to be safe than sorry!

Once he's done his chocolate based duties, Yuji curls up in one of the corners of the common room, resting his eyes for a moment. He's mostly recovered from the mission, but it's clear that he's still a little tired, even if he keeps throwing himself into things. He just can't help himself. ]

003. SCARY MOVIE(?)

[ The thing Yuji had actually been in charge of was the movies for the evening, and he's doing his best to find an impressive mixture of comedies and horror to take the edge off after all the fighting. Projector in hand, he's managed to sneak off base - as if he had to sneak! - and find some films for them all to watch.

Before the movie section begins, he can be found sorting through his little pile, putting them in an order, then shaking his head and redoing the order, and then putting it back into the original order again - choosing the right movie at the right time is clearly serious, and he's giving it his full attention, expression tight.

During the films, though... He does laugh aloud at the comedies, but during the horror segments he sits there, head tilted - no jump scare seems to get him, even if he does laugh a little at them, and he doesn't seem at all phased by some of the darker elements of the films. Once upon a time maybe he would've been, but after the things he's seen over the last few months...

When it's time to change the film, he gets up and wanders over, poking at the projector and swapping things over. ]

001. KITCHEN SHENANIGANS.

[Broth. Noodles. Fillings (some call them toppings or additions). Seasoning. The four components to any ramen dish. How Yuji and/or Raidou managed to wrangle Bakugo's butt into helping out is anyone's guess. ... It's honestly not that hard, despite appearing a monumental task. Since Raidou handled making the noodles and the broth is already going, Bakugo opts to deal with the slicing and dicing of vegetables, and making check-in rounds to the other stations on occasion.

There's a balance between bulk and options as well. Just because they don't have a lot of variety in the stores and markets due to the attack doesn't mean they can't add some good things to change it up a bit and let people choose. It'd give them a feeling of having some kind of control in the wake of a shitload of uncontrollable things. Plus that's more action in the kitchen and Bakugo doesn't want to be bored. Bored means time to think...

He glances up when Yuji appears and leans over the pot.]

Don't eyeball it. The tasting ladle's to your left.

[The "tasting ladle" is really nothing more than a long-handled spoon resting on a little piece of wood to keep it off the counter. It gets washed after each use. Too many people thinking something needs more salt/spice is a great way to ruin a dish.]

[ Yuji is happy enough in the kitchen, doing whatever he can to help out and make the evening easier on Raidou. He learned to be pretty good at cooking when his grandpa was in hospital, since he had to take care of himself for breakfast, lunch and dinner. There's only so much take out they could afford, so cooking was the only real option the two of them had, all things considered. When his grandpa died... Well, he moved into the dorms.

There were more important things than cooking then.

Glancing over at Bakugo, he nods his head, grabbing the spoon and doing as he's told - as he does, most of the time. A taste, and then he nods, stepping away to wash the spoon, because he knows what's up. He should've trusted Bakugo, but it's always good to double-check, just to make sure. ]

It's looking really good! I think this is gonna work out.

[ Making food and stuff for a lot of people isn't easy, but they seem to be throwing it together pretty well. ]

[Bakugo learned to cook from his mother, mostly because he was a proud kid and wanted to do grown up things because grown ups got attention and wouldn't it be awesome to have all the other kids see him doing cool grown-up things and praise him for being so skilled. Also because he found out he liked making his own food rather than relying on someone else who wouldn't be up to snuff with his standards. He took too it well, just like everything else he tried.

Really helped out when he moved into the U.A. dorms and refused to live on take out like some of his classmates wanted to do... Though Aizawa put a stop to that idea really quick. Had to learn to responsibly shop, budget, cook, etc., along side their training, schoolwork, housework, and everything else. There was always just going to the cafeteria for Lunch Rush's amazing cooking, but Bakugo didn't make that a frequent habit.

When Yuji nods at the taste, Bakugo trusts his decision an doesn't question whether it needs more of this or that. Good's good. They're not making luxury quality here.]

It'd better work out or you two are gonna get murdered. [By a bunch of hungry people. He sends a potato through the chopping machine that is his other hand+knife combo.] You know how to mince?

A. Food Prep

[Sadly, no hot dates have lined up for Taryon, but a decent meal at the base is just as good. Next year, he has more time to understand and prepare for the holiday. Today, it's down to the kitchen!

Which is still rather confusing with its modern microwaves, but most of the work has been done by young Raidou. Rather than let the teenagers do everything, Taryon swoops in to carry plates and bowls of food to the tables, pushing doors open with his feet as he moves back and forth.]

Incoming plate! [That's the only warning as a large plate of vegetables swings around the corner.]

B. A Comedy

[Taryon has claimed one of the spots next to a side table for himself where he can set a small plate of snacks to munch on in case the movie or the conversation doesn't grab his attention. It's been a busy week, and he's not feeling particularly lively this evening. Pleasant company and entertainment is preferable to staying in his room.

There's much about modern comedy that flies over his head, but overall? It's a feel-good film. Taryon's fine with vibing on the couch and letting his mind rest.]

[ Nanami is really only half paying attention to the movie, if that. But it's a chance to relax and do something less strenuous, so he's also taking advantage of the peace. During what feels like a lull in the scenes as far as Nanami is concerned, he approaches Taryon from behind the couch. ]

How are you feeling?

[ It was their first fighting mission after all. ]

[ Taryon leans his body back to check on Nanami before returning his attention to the screen. ] I'm alright. Tired, but no one's dead, and we took down that monster ourselves. I think that's worth a night of doing nothing.

[ Nanami does hum with a note that is close to amusement. They did manage to succeed in the mission, despite how chaotic part of that battle was. ]

I'd say that earned us a break for now. Is that what your team was like before?

[ Just pure chaos once the fighting started. ]

💥 KITCHEN.

[He might have expected something to be thrown together by LILITH for their efforts against the kaiju. Monetary reward excluded. After all, they put up a Christmas party as best they could. But for someone who finds Valentine's Day nothing more than an annoying bunch of "mushy shit", Bakugo's relieved there's no heart-shaped celebration being blasted in people's faces. Instead, a modest ramen meal spearheaded by two people in his dorm. Huh.

Of course he has no intention to help out! Of course he gets wrangled in to help out. It's Shashou and Gari Head.

Probably as expected, Bakugo either takes over the kitchen work or is at least being his usual confident, explosive self getting things prepared and ready: expertly dicing vegetables (and yelling at people who are too slow or suck at it), preparing whatever meat they manage to find (look, there's a SHITLOAD of orca-like meat out there ... IF those above say it's safe to eat), checking in on pots of broth to make sure they're salted and seasoned per the respective pot, and then either dealing with or inspecting the noodles. Most of the ramen noodles go whole in the pots, but there is one pot of broken-apart/crumbled ramen for the heathens/wusses who can't use chopsticks/forks for simpler soup...

That being said, Bakugo also finds some time to work on ramen salads, which have dry ramen crunched up and stirred in among diced vegetables, some scant cooked meats, raisins and nuts, and spruced up with light seasonings and oil. It's a different take on ramen and while not as hot as the seaming bowls of ramen soup, some might find the salad more appealing in the cold air. Fuck off, it's an option.

Of course, if you want to try Bakugo's personally-crafted ramen... be warned it's dragon fire spicy.]

💥 COMMONS.

[Bakugo stays in the kitchen to focus on the meal, but eventually has to relinquish control and get something to eat. It's no one's surprise that he'll head for a more private area of the commons and sit down to tend to his bowl of hot ramen. Most of his injuries have healed in the scant time between the raid and now, a combination of doctors and the healing implants many Outsiders have, but he's toughing any remaining pains out and tending to them with rest. His right arm's still stiff.

While Bakugo normally keeps to himself in social settings, he's more reserved than usual, less radiating the "fuck off" vibes and more sullen or introspective. Mind full of the realities they encountered during the kaiju raid. For two months, it'd been on the horizon, but to actually experience it? ... So long as everyone made it back alive and they won, that's what he cares about.

As for Valentine's Day... Would it be surprising anyone to learn Bakugo's never gotten a Valentine's before? Even if he was quite the popular guy in middle school, his intensity, arrogance, violence, and status as top dog badass really kept people away in that aspect. Plus he was known for never liking sappy crap any day.]

💥 MOVIES.

[As a kid, he loved watching hero movies. Especially those with All Might. Wide eyed and fascinated at the screen, shouting out lines or Ultimate Moves spoken by his idol. Growing up, his tastes changed more towards action and documentaries, still focusing on the heroes of his world's superhero society. All to say, by the time he's a teenager, having been through villain battles, seen the horrors of war, and dealt with things most people would only see "in movies", the stuff on the screen doesn't faze him.

Then again, Bakugo's never been that fond of comedies or horrors. He has a mocking sense of humor and horror movies are boring, full of characters who make stupid decisions and monsters that make no sense or could get owned easily by some thought. And no offense to Yuji, but after spending days trying not to get eaten or torn apart by monster killer whales, is horror that great of an idea to screen right now? ... With the other option potentially being romance films, Bakugo keeps his mouth shut.

He'll sit through one, but afterwards, will likely get up and go back to the kitchen to start cleaning up. Guess it's not a bad point to come in and talk to him. About whatever. He seems in a quieter mood than usual.]

[Raidou would have spent his time in the kitchen ignoring any of Bakugo's outbursts, but was grateful for his help. He got the vegetables done in record time, after all. Raidou would have still been giving him some directions, though, despite any pushback he might or might not get for it. While this was a project for everyone to participate in, he's the one who put this together and spent several days hand-making these noodles, okay.

Once they're done, and others have taken over the cleaning before the movie, it's time for Raidou to finally take a break himself. Seeing Bakugo sitting by himself, he walks over to join, sitting down next to him wordlessly. In his hand is one of the boxes of LILITH-issued chocolates, which he takes one from himself before wordlessly offering it over to Bakugo.]

[It's a good thing Raidou's adapted to Bakugo's volume level like so many in Class 1-A by now. And while he does tend to take over, if needed, when Raidou's out of the kitchen, it only takes a comment to get him to accept the summoner's running the show this time. The guy did all the work planning and prepping, so Bakugo slot himself into a worker and did the best damn job there. Though he was a little irked Raidou did all the hand-making noodles himself. More people could've made more noodles, you know. Plus he didn't get to see the guy's technique, which was for some reason, important.

Next time then.

Bakugo recognizes Raidou by the sound of his steps without even looking up, but flicks his gaze towards the box of chocolates when offered. Fine, fine, he'll sample one.] Where'd you get these?

These are the ones Synthia wanted us to hand out. They're not bad.

[He looks over the one he took a bite of before popping the remaining bit in his mouth. Pretty good.]

There are more over there. [He nods to the nearby table that has a few more small boxes and bars, different than those issued by LILITH.] Those came from school. I didn't know about this holiday so I was caught off guard.

[ Nanami is equally turning his attention to cleaning the kitchen while the movies play. He finds the activity just as soothing and someone has to clean up, so he's doing some of the dishes when Bakugo comes in. He definitely seems quieter than the personality that Nanami has seen before. After continuing his chores for a few more quiet moments, Nanami speaks up. ]

You don't like the movies?

[Since Nanami's dealing with the dishes, Bakugo opt to work on the food. He puts each version of ramen (stock) in individual containers, then bags any vegetable additions that weren't used. While another movie starts, he's left to think silently back on the dorm. His classmates watching something on TV while he and one or two others dealt with the kitchen, Bakugo focusing on whatever things he used and leaving their mess to them. (Until someone pissed him off enough to do it.)

The question catches him off guard, but he recovers instantly.]

I've got better ways to spend my time.

[It's a relaxing moment, separated from most of the action and simply cleaning up. Quiet and focused on nothing particularly serious, Nanami is less tense and fierce than he was on the yachts, with the stern energy mostly dampened down to a mild serious flavor. Compared to before, it's almost peaceful.]

It makes cleaning faster.

[Well, if he's volunteering, that's fine, but is he really interested in just cleaning?]
