DOWNTIME MINGLE #4

DOWNTIME MINGLE #4

CONTENT WARNINGS: suggestive themes, egg hatching, parenthood.

▶ 001. WINNERS CIRCLE.

During this time period, the Outsiders would typically have been met with a makeshift party with poorly placed balloons and streamers. However, this time it’s just a bulletin board with the following message scrawled out on it:
GOOD JOB:
LOREMIPSUM (K.O.)
REDMIST (600)
NICE TOY (600)
RISK (599)
Even though the mission was a partial success, there are still sponsors who were impressed with the actions of the recognized Outsiders. They also believe those who have contributed are still able to provide relief to the people, and should not be criticized too harshly due to their efforts.

In light of this, the base will have an increase of various lab-made spices delivered by a certain sauce company that heard a certain Outsider has a preference for spicy food. Apparently, the spices pair perfectly with their lab-made chicken.

Maybe it’s a coincidence with a certain network name but the Nice Toy Company also endorses the base and creates a whole line of toy guns in the airsoft and BB variety which replicate antique guns that any collector would salivate over! These are distributed on base and can be seen sold at many stores in Neo Tokyo. There has also been an influx of people who are passionate about fitness and training, sparking a trend for those who work out in bunny outfits. Supposedly, it’s something they’ve seen in a prior battle with the kaiju and so the workout is full of intense cardio, and even bunny hops.

Makima’s face will be found on several brands of what appears to be packaged dog food, however it is unclear if it is really dog food or not. Either way, several hundreds of packages have been delivered to base and are stored as “emergency rations.” Everyone on base is free to grab a snack or two at any time!

For those Outsiders worrying about whether or not they'll be docked pay for only taking down one Imugi instead of both, worry no more! Everyone will wake up one morning with a notification that 300,000 KRYPTOS (~2100 USD) have been deposited into their account. It seems pulling double shifts at their civilian jobs won't be necesssary...

▶ 002. PROJECT EGG.

With the last mission ending in the retrieval of the Imugi eggs, the research teams have been left with one major question: what will they do with them? After some initial discussions, it has been decided that they would keep the eggs and attempt to raise them into maturity in order to see if they could garner more insight into not just the kaiju itself, but of their abilities. It is also their desire to see what the relationship between kaijus and the rifts are, and they believe this would be the best opportunity to do so.

The only caveat to this, however, is who would care for them in the meantime? From previously documented research, they found that kaiju eggs are not easy to raise, especially those who mirror lizard-like creatures. They need special attention that exceeds that of what people would typically expect from egg-rearing. Due to this, LILITH is asking for help from the Outsiders to temporarily tend to the eggs. The Outsiders will be working in shifts to watch the eggs, and are expected to care for them properly. It is noted that for kaiju who have been separated from their mothers, the chances of them hatching are very slim, and so they are not expecting each and every egg to hatch. They are, however, expecting Outsiders to put forth their best efforts in spite of that. At least, it’s one less thing to be blamed for.

Outsiders are expected to sign up for egg raising shifts and will get a single egg to care for. They are to be with the egg at all times during their shift, and negligence will not be tolerated. Occasionally, the staff will send drones to check in and also deliver food items and energy drinks in order to ensure that the eggs are being properly cared for. Eating or destroying the eggs is prohibited.

Coming up with names, however, is encouraged, and Seok Dang has even set up a small contest for it....

▶ 003. OPEN FORUM.

As soon as the order is delivered for them to take care of the eggs, a new download will be prompted on everyone’s oculars. It comes suddenly and without any real explanation. When it loads in, people will find that it appears to look like the “forums” of old. They have various topics already posted, including a bolded one that remains pinned at the top of everyone’s oculars labeled “PARENTING FOR DUMMIES.”

When anyone clicks on it, or even allows their eyes to linger on it for too long, it will automatically open. The explanation at the top is as follows:

I see what you all look up in your free time and I think you could use the help.

Who wrote this cryptic message? Their identity has been kept anonymous, but it seems clear that Outsiders are meant to utilize this to field any questions in regards to the eggs they have been ordered to care for. Some of the questions already include “do I keep them warm by sitting on them?” and “what can I do to provide further enrichment?”

While most of these topics pertain to parenting, if one exits the parenting tab, they will find the forum is entirely opened up for other topics as well, including a GENERAL chat, and a thread created by Seok Dang called “AITA.” Apparently, this was all the rage once upon a time.

[ Note: Feel free to use this not only to discuss parenting, but also to discuss any other topics Outsiders may want to engage in. You can use the code below, or do it without! ]

▶ 004. AFTERWORD.

Welcome to our fourth downtime mingle! For the naming contest, we are limiting submissions to one name per character. This is entirely for fun and there is no obligation to participate.

We decided to keep the mingle lighter this time due to the number of player events ongoing. Please do check out the SPA UPGRADE and the ROYAL GALA also occurring this month. Big thanks to Sky and Bijou for organizing these! Additionally, the LOCATIONS page has been updated with both Kyoto and Okinawa. Characters may now visit those locations at any time.

All tags on this log are worth 2 points.

EVENT BREAKDOWN/RECAP (CLICK TO EXPAND)
1. WINNER'S CIRCLE: The heavy hitters/KO winners of the last kaiju fight receive their sponsorships, including spices, BB guns, training videos, and fancy dog food.

2. PROJECT EGG: Outsiders are tasked with caring for and attempting to hatch the Imugi eggs salvaged from Seoul. They are encouraged to try a variety of methods in order to get the eggs to hatch, as no data currently exists. Not all eggs will survive.

3. OPEN FORUM: Outsiders are provided with an open parenting forum to ask for and exchange egg raising advice. However, a certain someone seems to have also included a general forum for Outsiders to discuss whatever they wish....

[ Realizing that his parents were dead involved a lot more screaming. Shinn gestures a bit vaguely and helplessly, because he's less concerned about the mechanics (which he doesn't understand) than the fact that being a probably-dead battleship seems really traumatizing. ]

But if there are "remains," then the memories must be....

[ Really freaking sad and scary. He shakes his head. ]

Are you okay?
harboredfeelings: (you want to do what with my tails?!)

[personal profile] harboredfeelings 2024-09-21 09:28 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Ironically enough her original "death" as a warship is one of the least traumatizing things that's ever happened to her. That's just a fact all kansen have to deal with, sure it makes a lot of them wary about drowning but there's worse things to have a healthy aversion to. ]

I'm fine...?

[ One of her eyebrows does a disappearing act into her hair from her raising it at him, but that's about the worst of things going on in her life right now. ]

Are you alright? You look like you've just been slapped.

[ And she should know, she's been slapping people more than she probably should be lately. ]
lostdestiny: (other - 13)

[personal profile] lostdestiny 2024-09-21 09:59 pm (UTC)(link)
It's just that I --

[ He stumbles. He's kind of reluctant to say "I've sunk a lot of ships" to her, because when talking to a ship that seems severely messed up, like saying "I'm a serial killer." ]

-- I've seen a lot of ships go down.
harboredfeelings: (shiny?!)

[personal profile] harboredfeelings 2024-09-22 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
That's a hazard of being at war. I've sunk hundreds of ships, though I've only sunk a few kansen.

[ One of the marvels of her world's modern technology. Mass produced full sized warships without any crew, so none of the messy moral impact of blowing them out of the water.

What's more interesting is Shinnn's word choice. She's met plenty of other fighters so far, but not soldiers. And to her someone who's seen multiple ships go down is either a soldier or the world's most unlucky passenger. ]

Army, sailor, or pilot?

[ Her kill count gets Shinn to unwind a bit more; his anti-ship numbers are still in the double digits so he feels a little less like a shipgirl mass murderer. ]

Pilot.

[ Which reminds him that she's given her name and he should probably give his. ]

Shinn Asuka of Compass's Yamato Squad.

[ He doesn't salute, but he does straighten up seriously and earnestly as he says it, pulling himself together for taichouuuuuu's sake despite his lingering unease. He has zero hesitation about still identifying with Compass and Kira despite being at LILITH now. ]
harboredfeelings: (shiny?!)

[personal profile] harboredfeelings 2024-09-22 04:18 am (UTC)(link)
[ A human pilot is a very, very interesting thing to meet for the first time. They're pretty much entirely obsolete where she's from so her curiosity is peaked. What's his reaction time like, what's his threshold for redouts and blackouts, what position in the flight wing does he occupy?

All questions that go out her head with the last statement. She doesn't even realize her tails are wagging. ]

Yamato? I haven't seen her in long while...

[ The name's pretty nostalgic. They aren't close but the last time they saw each other things were a lot less of a mess. She doesn't dwell on it though, she just straightens up and inclines her head slightly in respect.

Not quite a bow, it seems silly for an aircraft carrier to bow to a pilot, technically he's the kind of person who'd be taking orders from her, right? ]

It's nice to meet you, Asuka-kun. How long have you been flying?

[ Shinn’s head tilts at the idea of connecting “Yamato” with a girl (because canon has given zero indication of whether Shinn knows that Kira has a twin sister—) ]

The commander’s a guy…

[ There’s noticeable touch of admiration when talking about Kira that doesn’t show up in many other of Shinn’s conversations. And although Orb is pseudo-Japanese, somehow it hadn’t adopted using surnames. ]

— but Shinn’s fine. I was commissioned about two years ago.

[ He frowns a bit as he says it. Has it really been that little time? Even accounting for his time at the academy, his life was a peaceful dream less than four years ago. ]

How long have you been a “kansen”?
harboredfeelings: (isn't that nice Akagi?)

[personal profile] harboredfeelings 2024-09-23 03:34 am (UTC)(link)
[ Her ears flick more out of embarrassment than agitation this time. ]

Ah, sorry. Yamato's a ship from my world as well. I'm sure there's no relation.

[ Seriously what are the odds he's from a world where the conflict they were originally part of as real ships took place? Slim to none, it's just a similar name. ]

I've always been a kansen. [ She's so helpful. She realized it at least, offering a shrug. ] We start training and fighting right after we're born. It's been a few years, I know that much, but... well, you lose track of time when you're always at war.

Tell me about it. [ He sighs -- sometimes the months-long stretch between the attack on Armory-One and the battle at Messiah felt like one never-ending nightmare -- before reverting back to frowning. ]

But I don't get it. Why make kansen instead of using normal warships?

[ Surely it is more useful to have a big chunk of metal with a lot of guns than... one girl...? ]
harboredfeelings: (recon shows that's stupid)

[personal profile] harboredfeelings 2024-09-29 07:20 am (UTC)(link)
There's massed produced ships too. They're just not that effective without kansen in the lead, the intelligence running them is pretty basic.

[ A shrug. A beat. Oh wait, when he says "normal" he means people doesn't he? ]

Ah, crewed ships? There haven't been humans in the military for a long time now, it's all kansen and crewless mass produced vessels that do the fighting. We're better at it, we take a fraction of the resources a human military would, and we're more mobile. Here, let me show you.

[ With an effort of will she summons up her rigging, a carrier deck made of blue flame that floats at her right side. A tiny plane made of the same blue fire appears on the deck and starts to make noise as its propeller spins up. Once it reaches the end of the flight deck it lifts into the air, grows to the size of an rc toy, and the flames melt away to reveal zero fighter. The little plane proceeds to set itself to circling slightly above Kaga's head.

Her ears twitch a little from the noise but she's relatively unbothered by it, pointing up with a finger as she continues her explanation. ]

I am an aircraft carrier, like I said. The weapons on my plane are as powerful as their full sized counterparts. The same's true for kansen of other types, take a battleship for example. If you can equip someone who's the size of a person and who uses the same amount of resources as one person with a fully functional two hundred millimeter cannon why would you build a "normal" battleship?

[ As much pride as she has in being an aircraft carrier Kaga kind of misses when she was a battleship with cannons. Maybe LILITH can figure out a way to integrated them into her carrier rigging? She should ask sometime. ]

[personal profile] lostdestiny 2024-09-29 03:45 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Shinn jumps when the carrier deck materializes, but he's totally entranced watching the little fighter launch. After it makes a few passes around her head, he holds his arm out straight -- a gesture somewhere between trying to make his arm a runway and inviting a bird to land on him -- and watches the plane hopefully. (He's tempted to go the more direct route of just picking it up, but based on his own experience getting grabbed out of the sky sucks. Also he's not sure how much the plane is still part of her and whether grabbing it would be like grabbing her.) The tiny fighter is like Core Splendor's great-great-great-great grandplane, he loves it already and is only half paying attention to what she's saying. ]

That makes sense....

[ After all, no one flies prop planes like this into combat at home when modern machines outperform them on every metric. (Tanks are another story; tanks are apparently eternal.) Although that raises the question -- ]

But they don't have anything newer than this? No mobile suits, no beam weapons?

[ Because although it's impressive that the power of an old-timey carrier can be packed into one person, Shinn is pretty sure that even most mass-produced mobile suits could wipe out a whole fleet operating at prop-plane levels of tech. What's the drive behind a military going compact instead of going more powerful?

Oh no, is this insulting enough that he's just blown his chance at playing with the little plane.... ]
harboredfeelings: (shiny?!)

[personal profile] harboredfeelings 2024-09-30 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
[ It doesn't take a genius to use context clues and discern "mobile suit" is some type of weapons platform. Exactly what kind she can only guess at but the name gives some ideas, if she's even close then it's not totally unfamiliar of a concept. ]

The sirens we're at war with have used beam weapons, kansen have always been more than a match for them. [ Off and on at least, they've contained the Sirens in a lot of ways but it's hard to really say if they're winning. ]

But as for our own technology? Each faction's kansen has their own edge Iron Blood's made rigging beasts that operate alongside their kansen, mostly sharks and dragons, Eagle Union's started to field some girls like that too. Northern Parliament has odd rigging none of us can really account for. Dragon Empery has begun deploying ship mounted guided missiles, although they're quite expensive. Royal Navy's swordswomen are near peerless, their capacity to gather information is quite notable too. Then there's the Iris Orthodoxy and the Sardegna Empire, both made up of talented swordswomen like the Royal Navy, though they also have faith on their side.

[ Literally. There has been divine intervention more than once on their behalf. Before she continues Kaga holds her hand up, palm out letting a ball of blue foxfire flicker to life in her hand. ]

The Sakura Empire has magic and our own swordswomen. The weapons us kansen use are able to cut through full warships like paper. Our technology may seem dated by this world's standards but we're plenty deadly, I assure you.

[ Speaking of deadly, Kaga decides she may as well throw the poor kid a bone. He's kind of adorably pathetic the way he's holding his arm out, she can't just leave him hanging. With a little effort of will she directs the plane to break off from its holding pattern and land on Shinn's arm. It's a masterful landing, which is good because if that propeller bit into his arm it would've hurt just like the real thing. The tires are rubber, the body is metal, the cockpit glass, there's machineguns and cannons gleaming from their ports on the wings. As much as it looks like a toy it can't be denied that the materials are pretty dead-on in details. ]
lostdestiny: (pic#17379407)

[personal profile] lostdestiny 2024-09-30 02:13 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Shinn's face lights up when the little Zero lands on him -- it's like Core Splendor's great-great-great-grandplane, he loves it already. He gently transfers it to his palm (facing it away from both himself and Kaga because he does not want either of them to accidentally get shot with even an old-timey fighter's worth of ammo) and leans in to inspect it, amazed by the detail and that it is, in fact, a whole functional plane in miniature. He's still not giving her his full attention because the plane is distractingly adorable, and mishears "dragons" as "dragoons" or he would pay more attention to that part. ]

Mobile suits can do that too, [ he says almost absently. Cutting up full warships like paper, that is. Resisting the urge to spin the little propeller, risk of chopping his finger off be damned, he glances up to look at her again. His expression goes more serious and focused, but he's still in very obvious good spirits about getting a close look at the Zero. ] Are sirens like the kaiju here?
harboredfeelings: (29)

[personal profile] harboredfeelings 2024-10-10 04:56 am (UTC)(link)
[ Unlike what a lot of people would have as summons Kaga's planes are entirely machines so there's no reaction to being examined, poked, or proded. They don't do anything Kaga doesn't mentally command them to, the most the Zero on Shinn's arm does is make noise as the engine idles. ]

You're making me want to see one of these "mobile suits" in action.

[ And making her want to fight it. This sounds entirely like a challenge and Kaga's more bloodknighty side would relish the chance to prove kansen battle superiority over another creation of mankind. Not that she has anything against humans! It's just important to let everyone know kansen are the peak of human invention.

Of course that enthusiasm falls a bit. She supposes she should've expected the question but thinking about Sirens puts a bitter taste in her mouth. ]

Some of their machines are, but the sirens themselves aren't. They're intelligent, manipulative, scheming little shits. [ Wow Kaga tell him how you really feel??? She sighs. ] They're unfortunately tough on top of that. The Azur Lane and Crimson Axis have been able to beat them back and contain them, but the war's gone into a full stalemate. Hopefully the kaiju don't prove to be as stubborn.
