Dunno about 'soulmates' exactly, but back home we gods have matchmaking events where we weave favorable ties between humans. Between gods, too, but mainly it's for ensuring mortals have peace and happiness.

You certainly live up to your title, Sir Destiny. [ who knows if they are a sir, or if he's simply just defaulting to what's comfortable. ] What constitutes as a favorable tie? Do you not think it a touch selfish to presume to know who is a fit match for who?

Rather than happiness, isn't the chance of the opposite much higher?

[Sir is right, so no need to correct him, at least.] Usually those whose personalities match, or who have overlapping interests in common. Though yeah, sometimes it does seem a bit arrogant for gods to meddle in the affairs of humans, even if we're only trying to help.

That... could very well be. I don't know all the ins and outs, having only attended one matchmaking event, but in general it seems that often the matches we make are at least as good as the ones that form naturally.

[In his experience, anyway. He watched as Hiyori got tangled up with gambling addicts, cult fanatics, and other unsavory types. After which he decided to put an end to THAT, thank you.]

Personality. Interest. Do you not believe those are all rather shallow? For some reason, I had expected gods to be a bit more discerning. Maybe that was my mistake.

Then isn't the bar rather low? If it's not any better than what people naturally form, I have difficulties seeing it as anything worthwhile for you all. That is, unless you simply relish in being the ones to take the reins, and seeing how far people can fall, and how fast. I don't blame you. Perhaps, that would be rather entertaining to see. Not so different than warfare in some ways.

Is it truly shallow, though? I would've thought those would be core components to making sure people were compatible, honestly. Though yeah, you probably were holding hopes that were too high for the gods of my world, at least.

Some people struggle with making connections, especially in this day and age of long work hours and little free time. We can help guide two souls together who might have never bumped into one another on their own. Perhaps it is barely worth our while, and maybe there is some hubris involved by those who simply long to control the fates of mortals, but on the whole We gods want people to experience happiness and love throughout their lives.

I had believed if they had existed, they would know all the answers. If they didn't, it would simply stem from a refusal to divulge what they felt was evident. I figured they'd enjoy the chaos they sow as much as the next entity.

Happiness and love? While I do not have much experience with the former, I do have to correct you in saying that the latter... is simply just a temporary delusion. Such naive words can't possibly suit every person. As you can see, it's difficult to suspend my own sense of disbelief in such concepts, or even in the gods themselves.

I'm sure there's some gods out there who do operate that way, but not all of them are like that. The gods of Japan in my world tend to be more benevolent and indulging when dealing with the people they watch over.

[Not that gods can easily communicate with most humans, as they tend to be unable to sense or see, let alone hear their deities.]

Maybe it's your own attitude that prevents you from finding someone to share your life with in such a manner. Love may not be for everyone, but I fully believe they can potentially find it if they open their hearts to the possibility. There's something to be said for positive thinking, even in the realm of dealing with gods and romance.

My attitude...? What a ridiculous notion. If there was such an emotion so powerful, would there be those that suffer for it? Would people move on to others, or would children suffer without any shred of affection from their own parents?

Considering you seem to believe in it, does it come from personal experience?
