[ it's always curious to hear of creatures roaming about, to her. the question makes her lean back on her hands, picking apart how much she can tell. ]

And many other kinds too, called Abnormalities. We've even standardized a categorical system based on their origin points and what they resemble -- for example, F-01-02 refers to the "Scorched Girl", based on folklore in one of the Districts of the City I come from. The F refers to what she's based on -- folklore, fairytale, and so on -- and the first number, 01, refers to what kind of being she is -- in this case, humanoid. The second number is simply how we tell the creatures apart in the system.

[ ... it's a lot of words, so malkuth lets it sit before she continues. ]

One that's similar to the Einsam... might be O-06-20, or "Nothing There". It takes the form of other people in order to kill them and take their place, mimicking everything from human speech to habits and patterns it might've picked up on while observing those in its area. It's one of the most dangerous Abnormalities we've observed for that reason alone -- it's very good at what it does.

[ It's a lot of words, but Fern has very often in her life been the recipient of such spontaneous lectures from her teacher. So even if she hears some terminology she's not quite familiar with, Fern listens dutifully - Malkuth makes it easy to follow along, in any case.

What's clear, too, is that she's very knowledgeable, just as Fern thought. And even in Miss Malkuth's home, there are creatures that sound very much like the demons in hers. ]

I see. Where I'm from... we call monsters that look and speak like humans "demons." The Einsam is not too far removed from them, but the "Nothing There" certainly does remind me of a demon... using human speech to deceive humans, only to devour them.

Demons, huh... I think you'd consider a good number of them such by that definition.

[ more than half of the Abnormalities feed off humans, after all. but it's wrong to call them that too. they're cannibalistic in a way. ]

And all of these just... exist around your world? Like, they roam and stuff?

[ She nods. ]

Mostly in unpopulated areas... We live in mostly peaceful times now, after the Party of Heroes defeated the Demon King many decades ago.

[ why are the names in frieren so generic smh ]

But my teacher and I have been traveling through those kinds of places, so we do encounter monsters now and again.

[ girl you are from a world that finally makes sense to malkuth. these are so easy to understand. they are exactly what they are. she learned french last month. ]

Oh, I see! Abnormalities can only be found one of two places back home -- in the Outskirts beyond the City's walls, and in old L Corp. branch facilities. Normal citizens wouldn't generally interact with them unless they went to one of those... and they wouldn't come out to tell the tale if they did. Abnormalities are not something the average person can deal with.

[ fixers can maybe. depending on their grade. but generally, abnormalities will win. ]

Where are you two going? Is it just for learning, or is there someplace in particular?

[ there's beauty in simplicity, perhaps...

but Fern will listen dutifully, as ever, finding her explanation to be easy enough to follow. Those proper nouns are also very easy to understand... But she has to wonder why it is that Malkuth knows so much about these Abnormalities, down to their very classifications - perhaps she's part of a group that regularly deals with them, like the Northern Magic Corps?

But... Right. Their journey. ]

We're... retracing the steps that Mistress Frieren took on the journey she went on with the Party of Heroes. We're traveling to the northernmost region of the continent to a place called Ende, where The Land Where Souls Rest is said to exist according to the notes we found from Mistress Frieren's old teacher...

[ don't worry about it.

but that means that mistress frieren was one of the people who defeated the demon king, huh... she must be quite old. and still spry as a spring chicken. considering one of her own coworkers adopts the look of a greying elder and can still whoop anyone's ass it isn't too farfetched to her, but it still interests her. ]

Your teacher's a pretty amazing person! Was Master Heiter a member of that party too? What's been your favorite part of traveling so far? I never got to back home, so it's been pretty exciting here.

[ So many questions...! Fern is happy to be on the receiving end of them, however... For someone to want to take the time to get to know her is always so meaningful. Mistress Frieren tries her best, but she's just not the sort to ask these kinds of questions. ]

Yes, Master Heiter was in that party, as well. Along with Himmel the Hero, and Eisen the Warrior. My favorite part of traveling...

[ She hums quietly, trailing off into a thoughtful silence as she draws her knees up to her chest. ]

Seeing Mistress Frieren get excited about magical items and grimoires. [ The same answer she'd given Mistress Sense, about why she seeks magic. But at that time, too, there was something else that stirred her heart. ] Discovering places that no one else has ever been before and getting a glimpse of the past that humanity has forgotten...

[ god frieren's world is really so easy. everyone else and their unusual terminology and malkuth's just so thankful for simplicity at last. ]

So you like that kind of stuff too, huh?

[ she mimics the other girl's position, chin on her knees. ]

It's amazing what's been left behind. What has and hasn't been found, despite all the people in the world that've traveled and have yet to travel. No two walk the exact same path in the exact same way... and there's still so much that hasn't been seen, that might have been once and never shared.

[ it's obviously a topic she likes, closing her eyes in thought. though... it's more the fantasy of it than experience; malkuth has not been much of an explorer, though she finds these days she'd like to be. traveling and seeing new things, meeting new people and experiencing what she'd never been able to before. even the hardships bring someone exciting to her life. ]

I think those are both good things to like about traveling, though. They're moments you can share with Mistress Frieren, and then tell about to the people you meet.

[ Does she like that kind of stuff, too? Even Fern isn't entirely sure for herself, but... she thinks she might. Fairly certain she might. So much of her life was simply about becoming a mage, and being Mistress Frieren's apprentice (and all of the other things that accompany such a role) but...

When Malkuth puts the notion to such words, Fern can't help but think that yes, she does very much like that kind of stuff, too. They're retracing Mistress Frieren's journey with the Party of Heroes, yes, but the world and even her teacher herself have changed in those days, and in traveling with her, Fern learns so much about magic, about being a mage, about herself, too, little by little. For how much she likes to complain about their day-to-day when traveling becomes difficult... she wouldn't change a thing about her life. Well. She wouldn't change most things about her life.

As for Malkuth, Fern tips her head to one side in question. ]

That's a very romantic way of looking at it. Do you travel a lot, too, Miss Malkuth?

I wish. But truthfully, this is the most traveling I've ever done.

[ there was a kind of travel in leaving the city way back when, if only temporarily. but it wasn't the same. they hadn't lingered in those dangerous, barren lands. they hadn't even asked the kids they found there what life was like. where they might have come from, what they did before... hadn't tried to get to know them all that well. they'd simply been her charges.

... no, the outskirts had just been like anything else. a means to an end. no thought to it outside of what benefit they had from working off the Head's grid. ]

The world I live in... is a very, very dangerous place. The only "civilization" exists in a single place, called the City, though there are people who survive outside the walls in the Outskirts. They're those who were exiled for some reason or another and their descendants, basically. The kind of travel you'd do is simply between the Districts, which can be as varied as the countries here in culture and custom, but I never did much of that either. It's hard to leave the District you're born in unless you work yourself to the bone and pay the steep price they ask for migration, or are naturally talented enough to ask a Wing -- a corporation -- to move you over and they accept you.

[ it's bleak. but she doesn't speak regretfully about it, she doesn't speak fondly, it's just... what it is. ]

Most Districts are big enough that you'd see a sight you hadn't before just by going to a different region of it, though. Wild, right?

[ The kind of place that she describes as her home world... sounds so entirely alien to Fern. It sounds... awful, if she's being honest, the kind of place she can only imagine being a reality in her own world if literal demons were to take over, and even then, it would be more likely for humanity to be eradicated entirely.

Her world really is so peaceful... and even though it's certainly not free of danger or evil, it's... thanks to Mistress Frieren and the Party of Heroes that Fern wasn't born into a world ruled by the Demon King. ]

...Yes, that is wild. I cannot even imagine living in such a civilization.

[ ... ]

But I hope, even though were's not exactly free to travel however we'd wish, here, that you can still see more places here, miss.

[ ... such a kind wish from a kind young lady. malkuth holds it close to her heart, smiling warmly at her. ]

One nice thing about it is that a lot of things I've done now are my first experiences with it, so it's like I'm learning or seeing something new every day. It's a lot of fun, so I'm thankful that my life has so much in store for me here.

[ it's a bit of a bright side to it all, because she's always been someone who's seen the good in a situation over the bad -- until she spirals, but that's for a different day. ]
