KAIJU FIGHT #3

KAIJU FIGHT #3

CONTENT WARNINGS: mind control, parasitic worms, gore

▶ 001. POSITIVE THINKING.

The aftermath of the last kaiju battle, has had LILITH researchers scrambling to find an adequate way to combat the aftereffects of the kaiju discovered in the desert. While their research is still very much a work in progress, for now… it’ll have to do. In the early hours of the morning, a message will appear on everyone’s oculars, asking them to suit up immediately and meet at the given coordinates, which will act as the Outsiders rendezvous point. These coordinates lead to an abandoned hotel within 1 mile to the outskirts of the strip.

"The system is updating…

The system is updating…

Downloading: ⇓"

A new update awaits each Outsider on their oculars. There is no option to decline, and right away it prompts you through several steps. This update was all in part thanks to the various dreams that the oculars have been reacting to. The researchers for LILITH figured out a way to combat these pesky mental side effects by forcing the mind into a state of equilibrium. In order to do this, Outsiders will be asked to think of their happiest memories. Perhaps, due in part to everyone downloading this update at the same time, people will automatically feel an odd sensation as they think back on these memories, almost as if their mind is connected to a collective. These memories will leave each Outsider feeling fulfilled, or even a temporary sense of high as the download continues. As a result, Outsiders may feel giddy or a sense of calm. Some may be motivated to talk about their happy memories with others the first time they do this.

▶ 002. BREACH OF THE CITY.

Once the download is completed, there’s zero time to rest. It looks like whatever they found in the desert isn’t interested in just sitting and waiting. They’ve come to the city with clear intentions of gradually infiltrating its borders. Who are they? Why, the missing people of course.

Apparently, as part of the kaijus life cycle, it lays eggs, which then hatch into younger worms, similar to actual earthworms. These young worms, unable to protect themselves, control the minds of other living entities in order to do their bidding and keep their own bodies safe. Once infected, their hosts become vicious and hungry for meat, attacking any living thing in sight and trying to eat its flesh to nourish the parasite within.

It’ll be up to the Outsiders in order to scope out these young worms controlling the people of the desert, while simultaneously knocking those individuals out of commission. In some rare circumstances, there will be no turning back for these individuals; if the young worm actually burrows themselves into the bodies of the controlled, they are no more than a reanimated corpse, and will need to be eliminated immediately. The longer these worms exist within these people’s bodies, the larger they grow, and by extension, the more influence they can exert over a larger net of people.

Instead of the camper vans, LILITH has provided other sleeker vehicles in order to quickly traverse the city. The vehicles are equipped for speed and are meant to assist in getting to the various coordinates LILITH sends out to everyone’s oculars. The coordinates all mark where these “controlled people” have been seen via drone footage.

▶ 003. WORM ON THE MIND.

While the attention will be focused on destroying the monsters that have come up to the city, there will be occasional tremors that can be felt that seem to come from far below— almost as if they were cries from the old city that lay forgotten below. Unfortunately, it’s much worse.

In the middle of staving off the attacks from the mysterious creatures, there will suddenly be the sound of the defense alarm blaring, and without any additional warning, something breaks through the center of the city. This will first be punctuated by the sounds of the building around them crumbling, followed by the clear visual of the large serpentine creature they’ve encountered in the desert. The large sand worm doesn’t even pause to regain its bearings. As soon as it recognizes the presence of other organisms, it begins glowing a fluorescent shade in varying indefinable colors—

Thanks to the updates on the oculars, there will no longer be hallucinations that follow any contact with the worm, however, if one stares too long, they will still be met with splitting headaches and a pressing sense of agitation, so Outsiders are cautioned against prolonged exposure. That said, it won’t always be easy to take a breather against such a large creature.

█ █ █ MONSTER DEBRIEF SHEET
NAME: ALITTA VIRENS
HEIGHT: 400 metres
WEIGHT: 1,900,000 kg
CLASS: Extremely Dangerous
LOCATION: Las Vegas, USA
ABILITIES: Mind control. Although full details are UNKNOWN, its young can take control of human and animal hosts. Once under their control, the hosts will become aggressive and hungry for meat, which is theorized to feed and nourish the young worms until they are ready to emerge.
EXTRA NOTES: According to what the researchers have surmised, similar kaiju have appeared on a much smaller scale and are susceptible to water poisoning and electrical shocks. LILITH has not found a way to fully free the hosts from the parasite, but they can be stunned after receiving multiple electric shocks.

"
YAMAKAWA: Angels of LILITH, please be advised of your roles moving forward. With the city already infiltrated, we will need to be quick."

A brief is sent along with her message.

█ █ █ MISSION ROLES:

✖ GROUP ONE: Those who fulfill this role will need to be equipped with brute strength and the ability to survive the attacks in a city that is the midst of being destroyed. They will also need the stamina to keep the worm at bay as the others complete their tasks before also gathering to exterminate the kaiju.
✖ GROUP TWO: With strong mental fortitude, these individuals will be expected to clean up the group of controlled individuals; not all will be able to be saved, and the ability to make that distinction is imperative for this role. Those who appear too far gone will not be able to regain their senses. They will need to be killed.
✖ GROUP THREE: This group will be concentrated on being able to property evacuate the citizens that remain in the city of Las Vegas. Preferably those who are quick on their feet, or are able to stealthily circumvent the dangers in the city in order to get the people to safety would be ideal for this role.
✖ GROUP FOUR: Those with support skills or a medical background will be expected to assist those in the other groups, whether by healing, additional abilities, or by assisting the other groups as needed.

Note: Roles can be decided by the characters themselves as to what they figure is appropriate and most fitted to their skill set. Everyone will eventually fight the worm (so this does not affect the fight mechanics of the worm itself) and people can also jump from one role to another.

▶ 004. LET'S WRAP UP.

The areas the worm has traversed leaves the ground above it weak and unsteady. Due in part to this, those who have evacuated will need to remain in the shelter until further notice. As a result, it’s up to the Outsiders to clean up the city. Aside from the large gaping hole in the center of the city that they can’t address immediately, they are first expected to get rid of the carcasses of the larvae.

Each Outsider will be provided with a suit and will even be given hover packs to scale down the side of these large holes. They will also be given traditional ropes and lines for those who want to get creative with scaling, or who simply didn’t make it there quickly enough to grab a hover pack (with the destruction to the city, some supplies are still in transit). They will be expected to review each carcass and tag which ones can be sent to the lab for further review, and which should simply be discarded as being unusable.

A coordinated effort is needed to adequately dispose of the largest kaiju. The alitta virens will need to be cut into several thousands of pieces, and so work needs to begin immediately. It’s not like the people can return to everyday life with a giant serpent-like entity laying on top of their city. Outsiders should be particularly cautious with it; even when dead, as it still seems to have strange tendrils inside of its body that appear to be writhing even after its death.

▶ 005. AFTERWORD.

Welcome to our third kaiju log!
Feel free to NPC your characters' fights with the smaller kaijus. The main fight with the largest one will be determined via a HP-based system (See below). Feel free to ask any other questions below!

All tags on this log are worth 2 points.

EVENT BREAKDOWN (CLICK TO EXPAND)
1. POSITIVE THINKING: LILITH has updated everyone's implants and encourage them to think of their happiest thoughts to give the technology the mental boost they need. Some characters may feel high or giddy and want to express their happy memories to someone else.

2. BREACH OF THE CITY: The worm larvae have a parasitic nature and are taking over the bodies of civilians. Outsiders are tasks to seek out those affected, killing worm larvae or civilians with parasites who are beyond help.

3. WORM ON THE MIND: The largest worm breaks through the ground in the heart of the city and Outsiders are encouraged to attack within their arranged group.

4. LET'S WRAP UP: After the sandworm monster is killed, Outsiders will be tasked with clean up efforts.

[Those damn wasps were a precursor to this. People taken over from the inside out, forced by external forces to do the bidding of some fucking creature. Katsuki's had little experience to that kind of tactic, Shinsou's Brainwashing Quirk being the only real form of "mind control" he's seen. But when it comes to people who are no longer, and yet still moving... he's dealt with that before, unfortunately. Having to face it again, after the mental assault from the first run in left him rattled, sucks.

It's not the same as the Nomu, those monstrous creations using people as their bases before being mutated into massive freaks and stuffed full of Quirks and enhanced biology. These people are still "people" even if some of them are already gone. Trying to pick out which ones are which is impossible in this invasion. So he has to operate with his own morals: knock outs. He refuses to go for a killing blow. Strikes to the head, the back of the neck, even under the jaw, as Raidou taught him, drop invaders one after the other. However, he also takes the time to blast a weak explosion into them, mostly aimed at burning off or blowing off clothing in order to find the larva and instantly kill it. So long as it's visible, the person can be saved...

The addition of that damn worm reminds him of Gang Orca bursting into the scene during their Provisional License exam, adding a surprise villain attack to the already-ravaged disaster zone that kept the young heroes' hands full with rescue operations. Now this fucker's crashing down into the midst of everything. Tch! Bring it on, you shitty beast! He has a personal vendetta to appease.

In the middle of all of this, there's an additional task Katsuki's set for himself. Out of everyone fighting in group one, there's one person he knows is going to have a difficult time. Not physically, but emotionally. He made him a promise too... Another explosion and the hero jets past, clapping his hand in Yuji's to catch him when the worm thrashes against the previous sword blow. He quickly tosses the sorcerer up to the building nearby to reorient himself, landing on his feet next to him.]

Don't be reckless. You're not doing this alone.

[ Yuji barely has to think to reorient himself when he's thrown up to a building, twisting his body to skid to a halt, breathing out a harsh noise.

For the first time in a long time, Yuji isn't sure he wants to keep fighting. It's too much like going against Mahito, too much like fighting the transfigured humans, and he doesn't know what to do in order to keep himself some measure of sane or put together in the face of it. He had never been able to get his vengeance for what Mahito had taken from him, and perhaps this was meant to be some kind of way for him to do that, but in the end... It just makes his heart hurt.

Everything hurts, especially with how hard he has been pushing himself. It's the same as the previous missions, doing all he can to keep fighting until there's nothing left but his own breathlessness and his fingers gripping his blade.

Lifting a hand to rub some of the sweat and dirt from his face, he looks over at his friend, blinking. ]

Reckless...? This was normal.

[ He hasn't even found himself in that much trouble! ]

It's fine, dandelion.

[Katsuki straightens up beside him, eyes mainly focusing on the streets below them. That monstrous worm crawling around, all those people running amok, half of them trying to escape or fighting back in fear, the other half attacking them under control of the damn parasites. There's too much to take in at one glance, and yet he has to. Trying to factor what to do to make for the most damage on their opponent, the least collateral to the city, and the most protection they can offer to the innocent. Pro Heroes have to take all of that into account and be ready to act on it, sometimes all within a second. Guts, mind, heart, body, which does he listen to at a moment like this?

Not the fucking headache, that's for sure. Yuji's here too. Katsuki frowns when his friend dismisses his "reckless" as "normal" when the guy's already hurting and pushed himself to a straining point.]
I'm not talking about your body.

[Yuji's body can handle a lot. And while his mind and heart can as well, they're more vulnerable. Especially after everything that's happened.] We're saving as many as we can.

[personal profile] eyescar 2024-06-20 07:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Hah?

[ Of course, Katsuki is aware of the depth of Yuji's hurt and ache, especially with the memories he had seen, and the pain associated with them. There's nothing that Yuji can do to take those memories away, nothing he can do to hide his own heartache and pain from the horrors of his own life, but he can at least make himself find something to create an uneasy peace between himself and the fighting he still has to do.

Yuji has something to focus on. That helps, even if he can't quite find a way of expressing it or putting it all into words.

Lifting himself up, he breathes out softly, wiping some of the blood from his face. ]

Yeah...

[ A sad, mournful reply, as he looks out over at the people. ]

I wish there was something more we could do. It feels like it's always too late.

[Katsuki promptly whacks the other boy in the back of the head. Certainly not a full-powered slug, but enough to make a sound. He has absolute trust in the sorcerer's thick skull to make the impact a moot point after a few rubs and the expected yelp of surprise and pain. Bastard. They're supposed to be thinking of happy things to combat the fucking slug in the first place, and Yuji's over here bemoaning shit that he can't help!]

We're doing everything we can, dammit! Don't sell our efforts short, Gari Head! [A heated glare lances from his face as he looks askance at Yuji, more reprimanding than actual hot rage. He's still irritated though.

Unfortunately, that's the nature of heroes. Heroes are reactive, the police are reactive, even sorcerers are reactive. They can't usually predict where "bad" will strike and thus have to respond as fast and efficiently as they can when it shows up. Meaning by their own nature, they're always gonna be "late" to anything.]

If we were too late, that fucking thing would be gone- [he jabs a hand at the worm below] -and everyone else in the city would be dead!

We're here now! We fight and we save now! Focus on what you can do, not on what you don't have control over! [There will be time to mourn and mope later. This is not the time to do so. Katsuki holds his hand out to Yuji.] We are the "something more" you just wished for, Yuji!

[personal profile] eyescar 2024-06-24 04:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Oww-- Katsuki!

[ Yuji winches, turning his head to glare and rub where he was hit. Sure, he might have a thick skull, but he's not entirely happy about being hit all the same. What is it with his friends and hitting him with all their strength? Scowling, he keeps rubbing, breathing out a sharp little noise as the soreness begins to ebb away thanks to his reverse cursed technique lifting into motion. ]

That's not what I meant and you know it!

[ Scowling still, he looks away, trying not to look as irritated as he feels. He knows they're doing their best, but it doesn't feel like enough. Nothing he ever does feels like enough, and that's more to do with his own negativity than the work of all of them together. Doing his best doesn't matter if people die.

He had promised to save as many people as he could, but seeing how many end up dying anyway...

Looking up at Katsuki, he frowns, still a little sore. ]

I'm doing my best, alright!
blastedass: by blastedass @ dreamwidth (💥 His like-i-give-a-shit face.)

[personal profile] blastedass 2024-06-24 05:39 pm (UTC)(link)
[One, they know he can take it. Two, he says things that tick them off and get him knocked! Katsuki doesn't bother hitting him again, turning his attention back to the city below. He knows Yuji didn't mean it literally, but words and thoughts have power. As cliche as it sounds, dwelling on and thinking things negative about yourself and your actions only serve to undermine your courage and resolve. Hearing the regret and longing in Yuji's voice is a reminder to do better; they can always do better. But it also sounds like a complaint about what they can do. What they already have done.]

Do I? [Katsuki narrows his eyes as he locks onto another potential attack point.] Do you?

[He knows negativity. Self doubt. Guilt. Regret. Weights that crush down and simultaneously spur on resolve and corrode spirit at the same time. Of course he knows it's not enough! It's never enough! He thinks back to Nanami and his disillusionment with the sorcerer society. How much of it was because Nanami never saw it as being "enough" to live up to his standards? Never enough good to outweigh the bad. An eternal cycle... That doesn't have to color their actions though.

Katsuki turns his head to meet Yuji's eyes, reaching out again, but this time to rub the place he smacked. Apology or soothing, it's up to Yuji to decide.]

I know you are. [Yuji always says he's doing his best, but does he even believe himself?] Don't talk like you're not. There's nothing more than your best.

[120% output doesn't technically exist.] Nice shot earlier.

You do! You know me better than that.

[ Yuji isn't quite pouting, but it's almost there, even as he gazes out at the world in front of him.

He is exhausted. Even with both Raidou and Katsuki looking out for him, he hadn't been sleeping well, he hadn't rested in any particularly good way at all, fearful of the nightmares that come hand in hand with drifting off more often than not. Even with Choso at his side, sleeping is hard, despite how easy it had once been for him. Nothing used to wake him up before, but now he's trapped in memories thanks to the forceful reliving of them he's had to go through.

Surely, it's just as bad for other people. It isn't just him. It feels a little bit pathetic, feeling this sad and low about it when other people have it just as bad.

He can ignore it, just for a little longer.

Leaning into the touch, he sighs. ]

Thanks! I'm getting better at fighting these kinds of things. They're not that different from curses, but they're different enough.
blastedass: by blastedass @ dreamwidth (💥 That doesn't completely suck?)

[personal profile] blastedass 2024-06-24 07:50 pm (UTC)(link)
... [He noticed the second question isn't answered. Point made.

Yeah, Katsuki knows Yuji well. Enough that he's able to have this kind of conversation. Not quite a pout, but it's enough for the blonde to lay off picking at him.

So many of these kaiju fights are drawn out slugfests, leaving everyone tired and running fumes. This one's even worse thanks to the weeks of fatigue from the nightmares, shared memories, dredged up traumas, and so forth. Katsuki's not any more alien to the dread of sleep due to the potential dreams jarring him awake in a cold sweat. It's been tempting to brain himself just to force his body to rest, if not take sleeping medication. He did neither, but... Hopefully after taking out this monster, the effects of the hypnotic attack and the upgrade will eradicate all of that soon enough. A decent sleep would be fucking amazing.

Some people are more resilient against their emotional pain; others stow it away and deal with the issue themselves. Katsuki wishes he could take the burden for Yuji and let him have rest for a while. But... that's an idyllic notion. This will have to be enough, as much as he can do.

Studying the kaiju below, his hand still rubbing at Yuji's head, Katsuki glances around the street.]

A monster's a monster no matter what world, huh. [Musing. He points to various points on the street.] If we drop those power line on it, that'll carve into its weakness.

[But damaging the city's power source is a bad idea...]
eyescar: (pic#16394608)

[personal profile] eyescar 2024-06-26 05:05 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Take what you can get, Katsuki.

Yuji is still trying to push and push, to break through his own despair and myriad of feelings to stay strong and survive. It's harder the more people he feels as if he has to lose, for all that he loves them, because he'd run himself ragged and drain himself completely if it meant they were safe. He'd said something similar to Megumi, before - if it meant that he lived, then it's fine if Yuji dies. His life is a fair trade, as far as he's concerned.

The others disagree, of course. But that's fine. He's not rushing out to die right now.

Pushing his pain aside, focusing on the now, he turns back to his friend and nods his head, drawing his strength into himself and looking around. A fight is a fight, and far easier to focus on, so that's what he lets himself drag his eyes to. ]

We could, but I don't want to risk any of the hospitals or anything like that.

[ Leaning down a little more, he frowns. ]

I don't know anyone with electric powers either. I wonder if we could somehow lure it into one of the power lines...? It's big enough.
blastedass: by bokunoicons @ tumblr (💥 Ready the grenades.)

[personal profile] blastedass 2024-06-26 10:39 pm (UTC)(link)
[He will. So long as it ends up getting him more Yuji.

That's the downside of being human. The curse of making friends. The more people you care about, the more you risk to lose, the more painful a threat it becomes. Perhaps that's why a lot of heroes never marry until they retire. Heroes already put themselves through so much to protect and care for people they don't even know. How much more would they do to protect someone they have relationships with. Katsuki likewise mentioned to someone recently that he would die if it meant they got to live.

It didn't go over well... but the thing is, Katsuki has zero intention of dying. Only at the utmost bare end, once he's exhausted all other options (outside of cowardice or criminal) will he throw his life in front of another. He aims to become so strong, the need for that kind of sacrifice won't ever even enter the picture.

Of course everyone else will agree. Because they have the same friendship curse too: they care about each other.

Katsuki's hand on Yuji's head also means there's connection between them, so if the sorcerer wanted to get a quick breather healer in, then it's been up to him this whole time. The option's there. But they do have a mission here. Pep talk's short and done.]

What about those? [His Grenadier Bracer makes a soft clank as he moves his arm and points to some of the cars on the road.] They all have batteries. [It wouldn't risk the hospitals or the power lines, but could definitely generate electricity. And the cars are smashed as it is...] Tch, Dunce Face could've been a big help right now.
eyescar: (pic#17114022)

[personal profile] eyescar 2024-06-29 08:50 pm (UTC)(link)
The cars...

[ Yuji looks at the cars, and then back at the rumbling sound of the worm that's echoing across the landscape. He's not any kind of mechanic and his knowledge of cars is limited, but he knows there's a battery, and he trusts Katsuki to have some kind of sense of these things. If he says it could work, then it could work, and Yuji is prepared to try it out.

It's not as if this would be the first time he's used a car in a fight.

Nodding his head, he leans back, considering for a moment. ]

It's probably more complicated than lifting it up and throwing it, right? Do you think we need to get the batteries out, or we should just try and get one of them in its mouth? The batteries might be a little small for it, too...

[ He's really trying, Katsuki. ]

Most car batteries won't give a person a fatal shock by themselves, but they still produce electricity.

[Jumper cables can be used to pass the charge from one to the other after all. Katsuki frowns at the cars below. Of course the worm's not going to let them merrily clamp a bunch of battery-attached cables onto it, and one of those batteries has to be running as well. Still, the batteries are available and the worm's not stopping. It's only a matter of time before a power line is taken down as well. And yeah, as cool as it'd be to see Yuji throw cars at the creature...]

Yeah, one's not gonna be enough. [He nods to Yuji's understanding, then indicates the cars again.] Get the batteries out. As long as we don't heat them up or shock them, we can carry them.

If we can't shock it, we can at least blow the damn thing's mouth up.

[personal profile] eyescar 2024-06-30 02:38 pm (UTC)(link)
If we can get a bunch of them together, it might work.

[ It's a good a plan as any other one, and Yuji likes having some kind of purpose. He likes being told what to do, because it means he can put his strength to work rather than trying to use his mind, which is not exactly his strongest suit. Battle thinking is different from normal thinking, but there's only so much they're able to accomplish here without risking civilians.

Yuji's hyperaware of that. He doesn't want any more death on his hands. ]

I can gather the cars and make a pile of batteries. It doesn't seem focused on us right now, so we might be able to do it easily enough.
blastedass: by bokunoicons @ tumblr (💥 Get to the damn point already.)

[personal profile] blastedass 2024-06-30 02:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Leave the cars; just take the batteries. Stick to this street. Only take them from wrecked cars.

[As impressive as it'd be to see a 18 car pile up, that's not needed.

Running through every street and commandeering a shitload of batteries isn't going to help anyone after the battle, especially for an experimental attack. But combing through the wrecked ones on this street alone, no one's going to be using these cars after the battle save for scrap, and if the batteries here can be used to help them destroy this fucking thing, then that's a sacrifice well worth making.

Katsuki's aware the powerlines are vulnerable and important, but he's pretty damn sure at least one or two is going to be coming down soon if this worm continues to crawl through the street. He trusts Yuji's strength and intelligence in battle. No one is going to die on their hands. Except that blasted kaiju.]

If you see anything that can be used as a net as well, grab it. [He squeezes Yuji's shoulder.] Ready?
