TRAVEL LOG #2

TRAVEL LOG #2

CONTENT WARNINGS: natural disaster, acid rain, vehicle crash.

▶ 001. WINGING IT.

In the early morning hours of the 1st, Outsiders will receive a rude awakening blaring through their implants. No matter what they do, the alarm will not stop sounding until they are forced to get up. A message will flash through their vision:

ALL OUTSIDERS ARE TO REPORT TO THE HANGAR IMMEDIATELY FOR DEPARTURE

Get up, get dressed in your plugsuit, and it’s time to go! Once they report at the hangar, they will be met with a huge spacecraft, large enough to fit at least 80 people. This will be their mode of transport to their next location.

"My Angels of Lilith. You are needed once again. We have received distress signals from the neighbouring country of South Korea. Unfortunately, since we have not established data portals in that country, we require you to embark via air. Your aircraft is ready for you and your seats have been assigned. I bid you a safe journey."

True enough, there are more than enough seats on the LILITH SKY CRUISER to accommodate every Outsider, and to get everyone organized quickly for departure, all Outsiders will receive a seat number. Like any plane, seats are rather cramped and there isn’t much leg room. Once the seatbelt sign is off, Outsiders are free to stand up and move around the cruiser, but they might have to climb over other people or make the whole row stand up to give them room. The aircraft is serviced by robotic stewards serving light snacks of nuts and crackers, and coconut crab kimbap and seaweed soup at meal time. Any characters who use a cloaking device will be instructed to use it during the flight to accommodate the aircraft. Also, any characters who rely on a weapon or anything else (such as a Gundam), it will be loaded onto the cargo of the aircraft.

The flight will take about 2-3 hours. Outsiders may take a nap, chat or try the inflight entertainment available. This inflight entertainment is delivered through a virtual reality headset. Outsiders may pick a selection of AI movies of questionable quality, along with several virtual reality games. There are single player or multiplayer options available for every game.

Available games include:
  • The Sims 30: One player gets to become the ‘god’ of a world and build houses or dictate the lives of other players and NPCs within the game as they see fit.
  • Farm Crossing: A farming simulator game where players get to build and manage their own farms. Harvest your crops and tend to your animals! Impress the friendly villagers in the town with your beautiful ranch!
  • Tales of Heroes: A fantasy game where players are reborn into a world of monsters and magic and have to level up by fighting monsters and slaying demons.
  • And many more … (Feel free to design your own VR games.)

Eventually, the sky cruiser will touch down on Incheon Airport. There’s no need to be stuck waiting in line at immigration... it appears as if the Incheon Airport has not been used in decades and seems completely abandoned with the exception of the Outsiders. The old scanning machines and luggage belts are simply collecting dust. Outsiders will be ushered immediately to the nearest train station, where they will continue their journey by train.

▶ 002. WELCOME TO SEOUL.

Once descended from the train ride, they will have arrived in the city of Seoul, South Korea. Similar to Neo Tokyo, a lot of the people on the outskirts moved to this area in order to receive shelter and the benefits of being amongst civilization, rather than fending for themselves. As such, there is a certain hustle and bustle, but considering the state of their dilapidated airports and most of the other cities falling to ruin, there definitely is a more somber vibe to the city. Despite that, the residents carry on and there is no shortage of shopping, food stalls (mostly with foods that are not easy to perish), cafes, pojangmacha to have a late night food or drink at, and many more smaller businesses. The people are resilient and have every single desire to continue making a living. As such the prices here are competitive and Outsiders will find if they look hard enough, there are some fairly good deals to be made. Currency exchange is no issue, as KRYPTOS is the universal currency.

Since a lot of efforts were made to keep Seoul intact, there are still some important sights that were kept up and can be visited if desired. While LILITH urges people to keep their eyes peeled out for any clues to the next kaiju’s whereabouts, Seok Dang may or may not have sent each Outsider a map of the best sightseeing amongst many other not-so-innocent suggestions. He calls it the difference of experiences and “doesn’t want anyone missing out!” If people check back on the message a day later, they will find it was almost as if it didn’t exist at all. On the list, however, includes sights like the Gyeongbokgung Palace, COEX mall and aquarium, Seoul Sky, and many others. However, some of them may or may not exist anymore. How long was he out of the country for? For an extra “freebie” he throws in, Outsiders will find an odd message on their style upgrade saying there is a new outfit available, when opened, it will download a hanbok that they can wear at any time.

"Well, well. Unfortunately, whatever fun could have been planned will need to be halted just a mere two and a half days to get settled. Once again, a message will be produced on everyone’s oculars suggesting an emergency is on the horizon. Guess we better get to that instead of showing you my home country!"

And Seok Dang wonders why he is the Commander's least favorite.

Beep! An alert pops up on the Outsiders' ocular devices. According to the information LILITH just received, there is not just one large kaiju occupying this region, but two. In order to chase both of these leads, Outsiders are split into two groups in order to chase these two kaiju. They have described these kaiju as being very agile and fast, but resembling a serpent from the few sightings that have been spotted. As for the rift that it originated from, there is no sign of a rift in South Korea. Did it migrate here from somewhere else? More details will pour into the Outsider's devices as soon as possible, but for now, Outsiders are called to pursue the hunt.

▶ 003. TEAM SEOUL.
EVERLIGHT & REDEMPTION

Within the next hour, rain will begin to fall upon the city, but this is far from the average summer shower. The precipitation doesn’t seem weather-related as much as it does seem to be a proponent of the kaiju’s abilities. They find this when studying the rain itself, which is acidic to the touch. While the buildings and other structures will remain sound, the people will need to evacuate quickly in order to avoid any lingering effects to the skin. Skin contact with the acid rain will cause both minor and severe burning, depending on how quickly it is rinsed off with normal water. At the first discovery of the acid rain's danger, Outsiders will be commanded to press a button on their plugsuit on the left shoulder, activating an invisible helmet to keep their heads and faces safe.

The Outsiders’ plug suits prevent them from receiving any damages from the rain, but that’s certainly not the case for everyone else. The first team, made up of the members of Everlight and Redemption are to prioritize the initial evacuation of the people, especially those who live slightly outside of the city limits of Seoul. They are the most vulnerable during crises like these and will need to be pulled from their homes, and those who live in the basement shelters will need to be pulled to one higher ground in case of potential flooding with the acid rain. Individuals who have skills in healing will also be called forth in order to tend to the injuries of those who are saved.

Between evacuation, there will also be tidbits of information provided to those on the team that remains in Seoul to check out specific locations in order to figure out more about this kaiju. The first location listed is Gyeongbokgung Palace. Outsiders that remain in Seoul will be utilizing that as their base. They are set to look at any remains the kaiju may have left behind. Any findings are commanded to be surrendered to LILITH. Emergency response of South Korea will use this palace as a safe haven, providing cots for sleeping overnight and other emergency supplies.

▶ 004. TEAM BUSAN.
BRIMSTONE & REVELATION

The second team will depart via train on a journey to the city of Busan. The journey is expected to take 2 hours, and while there are comfortable seats available on the train, any luxuries beyond that are minimal. At least LILITH has brought along a few VR headsets for whoever wants to kill time with games or bad movies? Anyone can sit where they'd like for this ride.

An hour into the trip, a loud crash is suddenly heard, with the entire train rocking and falling to its side. This causes a complete blackout throughout the train and it stops functioning completely, leaving Outsiders stranded within the pitch black tunnel. The train system is completely inoperable in this condition. Outsiders will need to make their own journey to the city, following the rails by foot and helping any Outsiders who happened to be injured in the crash. It’ll be dark within the tunnel, but light will soon emerge once they exit it, and they will find themselves at the foot of Mount Geumjeong.

From then on, they’ll need to put their trekking skills to the test and cross the mountainous, forested region, where they will encounter various local fauna such as snakes, deer and black bears. They will also spot many destroyed villages and temples on their way to Busan. However, evidence of the Kaiju can be found in both the subway tunnel and throughout the mountain trek, suggesting that the kaiju has moved through here. This encourages LILITH to keep Outsiders in this area. The Outsiders will need to make a campsite in one of the destroyed villages, though emergency response will also pay them a visit several days later with sleeping cots and emergency supplies. In the meantime, hopefully they brought enough food with them or know how to forage and hunt for food in the wilderness. Some of those berries out there are poisonous....

The team here will be encouraged to explore the area to find further traces of the kaiju and help any villagers who are still alive.

▶ 005. STATUS REPORT.

Promptly, at the same time, all Outsiders will receive a text message and be put in an encrypted chat-room: OPERATION: RED/BLUE
CODENAME:
LOCATION:
STATUS:
FINDINGS:

Outsiders are instructed to fill out this information and send it into the chat to communicate with one another.

▶ 006. AFTERWORD.

Welcome to our second travel log!

Characters do have ASSIGNED SEATS for the duration of their flight to Incheon airport, though there are just enough empty seats that some characters can move around if they really don't like their seat buddies. Teams BRIMSTONE and REVELATION will be traveling to Busan, while teams EVERLIGHT and REDEMPTION will be staying in Seoul.

RNG below to discover what your character will find in both Seoul and Busan respectively. For the STATUS REPORT Prompt, treat it as an open chat room for all Outsiders and respond to the HEADER COMMENT. Feel free to threadjack and discuss among yourselves. You may also include this as a text prompt in your top level if you would like for people just to reply to you instead of using the header comment.

All tags on this log are worth 2 points and will count towards August AC.

EVENT BREAKDOWN/RECAP (CLICK TO EXPAND)
1. WINGING IT: Characters are told to head to the hangar for DISPATCH to SOUTH KOREA where reports of a kaiju have been seen. Characters sit in their assigned seats for a short air travel ride.

2. WELCOME TO SEOUL: We arrive in Seoul and are given orders to split into two teams: Everlight & Redemption in Seoul, Brimstone & Revelation in Busan. Seok Dang has tried to sneak in some sight seeing in between mission briefs, but it looks like there won't be much time for that, as two kaiju have been found in South Korea.

3. TEAM SEOUL: Everlight & Redemption deal with acid rain in Seoul, ushering civilians to refuge, tending to acidic burns and using Gyeongbokgung Palace as a makeshift base. Investigation hints at the kaiju being somewhere in this area as Outsiders find claws, teeth, droppings and other things that belong to a dragon-like creature.

4. TEAM BUSAN: Brimstone & Revelation board a train to Busan which has an outage, trapping them to travel along the tunnel in the dark. They arrive at the end of the tunnel at the foot of Mount Geumjeong and create a makeshift base in the village there. Investigation hints at the kaiju being somewhere in this area as Outsiders find claws, teeth, droppings and other things that belong to a dragon-like creature.

5. STATUS REPORT: Outsiders are encouraged to share their findings and speculations on the kaiju in an encrypted chat room.

[They're still going to prefer talking to Raidou over Katsuki in any given choice scenario. But knowing the summoner has that smile reserved for people he's closer to is kind of a small comfort in the hero's book.]

Soba. Make that for him. He's a fanatic. [Well, as "fanatic" as Todoroki can get with that blank face of his. It's still the other hero's favorite meal. Considering how good Todoroki's sister makes it, he's not surprised.]

Aren't you working as a cook in that little bar? [No harm in admitting you have more to learn, but... your occupation is one! Talk about learning on the job.]

We can make do with the time we have. Take it day by day and be ready to go at any time.
the_fourteenth: (059)

[personal profile] the_fourteenth 2024-08-05 03:15 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, true, yes. Kiritsugu-san had hired me after we cooked all the ramen for the base. But that's mostly what I make there, and it can be hard to find the time to try other things.

[When in the base kitchen, he's often trying to improve on his ramen recipes. That, and it turns out Yuji really likes noodles...

But, in the time since they've gotten back from Vegas til now, he hasn't been in there as often as he likes. He's spending almost all his spare time in the training rooms after seeking out more people to spar.]

I try to. I just don't want to see this city go the way of Las Vegas. Things here seem hard enough.
blastedass: by bokunoicons @ tumblr (💥 This is his version of decent.)

[personal profile] blastedass 2024-08-05 04:09 am (UTC)(link)
You can make a lot of things almost as fast as you can make noodles. Buy those at the store instead; then you won't have a choice to fall back on noodles.

[Tough advice on forcing yourself to learn new things, but Katsuki's always been like that. Even if Yuji really likes noodles. He knows it's been a squeeze in time and scheduling. A lot of them are still recovering from Vegas, the heatwave and monsoons didn't help either, and now this new trip is gearing up.

But he's glad to see Raidou back in the training rooms, even if he hasn't gotten to talk to his friend yet about whether he intends to join the front lines again. Katsuki kind of twisted his arm to join him in battle during the worm invasion, and has no regrets about it.]

Seems like there are two threats here. LILITH mentioned a double signature. If there are, we should try to keep those bastards away from the city.
the_fourteenth: (031)

[personal profile] the_fourteenth 2024-08-05 06:46 pm (UTC)(link)
True... I do like making them, but it is quite time consuming.

[Raidou looks thoughtful as he continues to look over what wares are available. Looks like some things available are on the more non-perishable side, so maybe he can sneak some things home after all. Spices, if nothing else. He starts looking some things over.]

I also hope that, if that's the case, we can fight them one at a time. Two creatures of kaiju size, attacking at once...

[Would there be enough Outsiders for two fights? If that was the case, there would be no way he could stay out of the battle this time.]
blastedass: by bokunoicons @ tumblr (💥 What's only kept in silence...)

[personal profile] blastedass 2024-08-05 07:00 pm (UTC)(link)
You can always buy them in boxes. [Katsuki's honestly surprise Raidou makes his own noodles in the first place, but impressed all the same.] Just don't get those shit ramen packages.

[He doesn't trust those things. Not in his world, not in this one. Unless you get the ones that promise quality. Truthfully. Finding a rack of spice bottles, all shrinkwrapped alongside their stand, Katsuki picks it up and starts browsing through the kinds inside. They look older, but probably due to overstocking, considering the date on the packaging.]

Not if we can sic them on each other.

[Something Katsuki will be gunning for once the Outsides start talking on the comms during their searches.]
the_fourteenth: (011)

[personal profile] the_fourteenth 2024-08-06 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
Oh? [Now there's an idea.] Do you think they'd do such a thing? It certainly would make things easier. Perhaps they're territorial...

[Raidou spots what Katskui's looking at, and picks up a bottle to look it over. A little old, but...]

They should be okay, yeah? Dried spices wrapped like this. Let's grab some.
blastedass: by blastedass @ dreamwidth (💥 Uhh... what'd you say?)

[personal profile] blastedass 2024-08-06 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
If they're predatory and territorial, with the same prey, it should work.

[That's the hypothesis at least. A few things would have to line up. Putting a tiger and a wolf in the same room doesn't always start a fight.]

We'd have to lure them or instigate a fight.

[Which will take more research and knowledge than they have. He glances at the spices as he hands it over to Raidou to inspect it alongside the other bottle.]

They should travel well.
the_fourteenth: (039)

[personal profile] the_fourteenth 2024-08-06 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
It's worth a try. Though I hope we don't have to fight them both at the same time.

[They've been successful so far, but each kaiju battle has been more difficult than the last.

Raidou takes the bottle and gives it a quick inspection. He gives Katsuki a nod; there's that smile back.]

My thoughts exactly. I'll be eager to try them once we get back. Let's hope this mission's a short one.
blastedass: by blastedass @ dreamwidth (💥 Knock knock gift.)

[personal profile] blastedass 2024-08-06 03:29 am (UTC)(link)
There's benefits if we did. Getting them to fire on each other or interfere with their own attacks while we focus on keeping them busy and confused would make the fight easier on us.

[But if the kaiju fought separately and thus divided the Outsiders on two fronts, that would be more difficult. Splitting their forces wasn't the best idea, though with what happened in Vegas, perhaps operating in waves was better than a shotgun blast of every Outsider at once.]

You could use these in a curry. [Katsuki picks up another spice rack package, but puts it down quickly when he notices two of the jars are cracked badly. Nope! Not even a bargain is going to get him to take something already ruined.]
the_fourteenth: (143)

[personal profile] the_fourteenth 2024-08-06 09:08 pm (UTC)(link)
[Time will tell. It's a sound strategy. It would be great if they could do something to make any of these fights easier, and control the damage.

He didn't want a repeat of Vegas. Never again. Images from the medical ward still haunt him from that disaster.

Enough of that talk. Raidou didn't want to dwell too long with what little time they probably have before it's back to the mission.]

Ah... [Too bad about those bottles.] That's okay. These should be good for now. We can see what else is here before I spend all my money in one place.
blastedass: by bokunoicons @ tumblr (💥 Just your normal high school boy.)

[personal profile] blastedass 2024-08-07 04:42 am (UTC)(link)
[This is the first time they've had to deal with the prospect of two distinct kaiju, compared to a group of the same or a single beast. Katsuki still carries the burden of guilt and anger over what happened in Vegas. Keeping these monsters away from the city would be a massive benefit for all of them.

But he takes the silent cue to shelve the talk of that for later. There'll be more time for preparation. Right now, he can curb his impatience and rest in the evening. It's... not the easiest task for Katsuki. Raidou's presence helps.]

All of it?

[His retort's mildly taunting. Raidou's always seemed to have a logical and responsible head on his shoulder.]
the_fourteenth: (014)

[personal profile] the_fourteenth 2024-08-08 07:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, not all of it all of it.

[It's tempting, but he can only carry so much home, and there are lots of other places to visit yet.]

But, who knows if and when we'd have time to come back and visit this place.

[He manages to even bargain down the price of the spices he's getting a little. They're a bit on the old side, after all. Maybe it's his unreadable expressions that makes it hard for vendors to argue with him.]
blastedass: by blastedass @ dreamwidth (💥 Uhh... what'd you say?)

[personal profile] blastedass 2024-08-08 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
[Katsuki gives him a look in agreement.]

If they can establish a portal here, it'll be like like Kyoto, Okinawa, and Vegas.

[Meaning they can go back almost whenever. The Outsiders are able to at least go to Okinawa repeatedly, taking a break on the beaches. If they don't mind the giant grabs and the huge vegetation. This means other cities with portals can request Outsider aid, whether they have them or have to get them set up...

Katsuki watches Raidou haggle a better price from the shop owner. It reminds him of a poker match, Raidou's impassive face going against the seller's attempted savvy. And the summoner comes out on top.]

How much did they give you for being the Capital Summoner?
the_fourteenth: (018)

[personal profile] the_fourteenth 2024-08-09 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
That'd be great. It might not be as big as Neo Tokyo, but there are still things I'd like to see here.

[He definitely wants to go back to Okinawa too, though who knows when he'd find the time. But being able to catch your own fish for dinner is pretty great.

He gives Katsuki a bit of a sly look for that comment.]

As if that would get me a discount, here or at home. I got used to bargaining at the market, as I usually ended up doing the shopping. Though my boss was better at it than me.

[And sometimes even the aunties of the neighborhood just gave him food, the bachelor detective and his young assistant obviously starving to death on their own!]
blastedass: by bokunoicons @ tumblr (💥 Everyone else looks like shit...)

[personal profile] blastedass 2024-08-09 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
Aa. I doubt we'll have as much downtime here. [Something about this place is ominous even from the start. Vegas was a vacation with occasional oddities. Seoul's a problem waiting to happen and people live braced for it. Stubborn and dour.]

Why do some places already have portals LILITH can connect to and some don't? [Thinking out loud mostly. The base in Kyoto was like Neo Tokyo's yet completely abandoned, while Vegas just shoved them in a hotel and called it "base" while they were there.

Katsuki breaks from his thought when he glances at Raidou, only to furrow his brows in suspicion at that sly expression. Don't do that, Shashou; the brim of his hat makes the look downright creepy. In an attractive way... if it weren't aimed at him.]

I wasn't suggesting you pull your card! [Though the idea of Raidou whipping out "Capital Summoner" cards to prove his status and get a discount's pretty funny.] Did you have to bargain? You were serving the Capital already.

[You'd think that would come with some kind of proof or station that would have people willing to help out the man protecting them from spooky shit. Yeah, he knows the summoners aren't the same as heroes, BUT STILL!

The government hired him!]
the_fourteenth: (041)

[personal profile] the_fourteenth 2024-08-09 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
Perhaps some places didn't have the technology yet. Or LILITH needs to establish something with locations that hadn't had them in the past. Perhaps they did have them at one point, but they were lost in all the chaos, and LILITH found them again. Like Kyoto.

[Also just thinking out loud. Could be so many reasons. Not that LILITH is ever super forthcoming with answers.]

Ah, you forget, almost no one knew about that fact. My job and title were secret. The general public had no idea.

[He's also not a government employee. A member of the Kuzunoha clan, and at the employ of their allies, the Yatagarasu Organization. A nationalist organization, but not governmental. All shrouded in secrecy.]

The people in our neighborhood simply thought I was a high school student and junior detective alone. And someone had to do the shopping.
blastedass: by bokunoicons @ tumblr (💥 Change of plans...)

[personal profile] blastedass 2024-08-09 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
There's a lot they're not telling us. [It's easy to slide into that topic, since it's the essence of why they're here, always swimming around the backs of their minds and ready to pop its head up.] It's not distance or location.

[Bakugo slips his hands into his pockets as they pass another stall, closed for the evening. The scent of food and trees mingle with the city air, a weird spice he can't place occasionally wafting past and vanishing again.]

Tch. [Yeah, he does keep forgetting that.] Then they should've paid you a fucking salary or allowance to cover your living expenses!

[The title of "Capital's Summoner" certainly suggests the government knew about it. Hmph. Seemed a legit position. Even old stories of the Emperor's Shadows, or whatever, still spoke of ninja in direct employment of the Emperor. Bakugo's too used to having heroes and the government working together.]

They demanded a lot of you without paying for it.
the_fourteenth: (134)

[personal profile] the_fourteenth 2024-08-09 03:48 am (UTC)(link)
My clan does just fine for itself. They're not about to let me go hungry.

[He got more of an allowance than a salary from them, but he has enough to get by. Besides, they gave Narumi a stipend for working with them and letting Raidou stay with him. With their long lineage and important work, the Kuzunohas weren't hurting for money.]

I'm sure they paid my boss to cover my expenses, and then some. We also made money from cases. That doesn't mean I'm above a bargain.

[Raidou idly browses the stalls as they go, some closing up, some offering deals at the end of the night. He's content with what he's got, but it's a convenient excuse to look away, his voice turning quieter.]

It's fine. It doesn't matter now. My jobs here and what LILITH pay us are enough.

[They have a place to stay and food for free, so he ends up spending most of his money on others anyway. Better food for the kitchen, keeping his motorcycle running, the occasional date night, souvenirs for his friends. What he was paid at home no longer matters.]
blastedass: by bokunoicons @ tumblr (💥 Hmph around the corner.)

[personal profile] blastedass 2024-08-09 06:21 am (UTC)(link)
What's your clan to the Capital? Secret service?

[It seems strange and entire clan would dedicate one summoner to the Capital that no one was supposed to know, without the government's involvement. He figures a national body would certainly be involved with the nation's government.

Good to know they weren't tossing Raidou into the city and having him fend for himself at least.]

Che! If you can get something for equal quality for less, go for it. [Bakugo's used to good quality things, but he's not about to turn up a sale if he judges the product worth the price.] Your boss wasn't the same guy you lived with, right?

[Once again, Raidou's quieter pessimism returns, dismissing his life back home for the one they have here. Bakugo stubbornly holds onto belief his friend survives, but he's not the one that'll be returning home to the unknown. He was brought to Neo Tokyo after his near death experience.]

One of the new Outsiders was drinking a fucking tab up last night. Baka.
the_fourteenth: (141)

[personal profile] the_fourteenth 2024-08-09 04:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Mm... I suppose more like contracting consultants, I suppose. I may be the Capital's summoner, but it is not official government work. Long ago, onmyouji were an important part of the government, but not nowadays.

[thinking on that, his voice had stayed quiet. Seimei, the boy Katsuki saw in Raidou's dream, was fighting for such a cause - the resurgence of onmyouji like himself to become needed and important once again. Not to be relegated to fighting things in the shadows, like their summoner and exorcist allies.

He tries to shake off the thought, to answer Katsuki's question.]

Ah, yes, he was, actually. Narumi. It was his detective agency. While not a summoner himself, he was aware of my position and our real work, and knew a lot about it.

[His head tilts curiously at that last comment. Sounds like something Narumi would be doing if he was here, truth be told.]

Doesn't surprise me. Sometimes it's hard to not think of it like a vacation, before the mission really starts.
blastedass: by bokunoicons @ tumblr (💥 And I said I don't care!)

[personal profile] blastedass 2024-08-09 06:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Mercenary detectives for yokai activity.

[Is what he's hearing. Even if Raidou's clan is the one supplying the mercenaries for hire, keeping the entire thing on the down low in the government. Katsuki hums at the mention of onmyouji, at least familiar with that court position from history lessons. Long ago history lessons...

He glances at the other boy, noting his quiet. Right, Seimei had been related to that. What that guy's ambition was, he didn't know, but it clashed with Raidou's job to protect the capital. A betrayal of friendship.]

Eh? I thought you were holed up with some stranger. [Reevaluating.] The detective agency was your cover job, but you were already a detective. A supernatural one. Or did you merge the work?

[Like how some spies would get a cover job that actually fit their occupation or placed them near their target. Making the cover work for them rather than an obstacle to get around.]

It'll suck for us if one of our own's down with a damn hangover when we're called to action.
the_fourteenth: (129)

[personal profile] the_fourteenth 2024-08-09 07:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I suppose that's one way to view the Kuzunohas. [Just doing what needed to be done, for generation upon generation.]

That's correct. It was merged. We specialized in "unusual cases". If someone came in with something that sounded promising, I would look into it. Occasionally, those in the know would come in specifically for the Capital's summoner... and would assume it was Narumi, and not his apprentice.

[In their defense, Narumi is in his 30s, and Raidou is a teenager.]

But no, he is no stranger. I worked and lived there for two years with him, above the office.

[Past tense. But, there is fondness when speaking about Narumi, pain in the ass he can be. He's a good detective and a good guy, when he's not slacking off.]

Hm. I wonder if LILITH has any tech for sobering someone up in fast?
blastedass: by blastedass @ dreamwidth (💥 Moving forward.)

[He'll take that acceptance. While he doesn't see Raidou as the stereotypical mercenary, a rough tough military man with loyalty to money and little else, the idea behind the Kuzunohas like that is easier to get behind.]

Hoh? [Katsuki glances at Raidou with the corner of his mouth quirked up in interest. This is the first time he's heard anything about how Raidou's job worked outside of vague statements. It piques him.] What kind of cases? Lame spooky things like voices at night or weird shapes in the window? Or was it a body in an alley with no blood?

[That went from 5 to 100 real quick, but hey, it's yokai stuff. He nudges Raidou in the ribs with his elbow, grinning at his friend's underlying frustration his age made people assume it wasn't him.]

They probably thought you ran the books, Shashou!

[Ha ha ha! So much for the great Capital Summoner! There's another point for the hero society having their information right out in the open, heroes recognized even in training. Katsuki sticks more with Raidou's fondness for the guy than the past tense, not wanting to bring him down. Even bittersweet memories can bring a smile.]

Haa?! Gross! I don't wanna know if they do! If someone gets wasted, that's on them! Let 'em crash and burn in the mission.

[There's still a part of Raidou, all these months later in Ne Tokyo, that wants to keep all of this close to the vest. he has to remind himself that it's okay to talk about these things here, and especially with someone like Katsuki. A trusted friend.]

Both ends of the spectrum, yes. Often they turn out to be nothing supernatural, just someone with some superstitions asking us to investigate something. But, we have to take each one seriously, just in case. You never know when something might be for real. There are many, many kinds of demons out there that can do all manner of things.

[He does look on his time with Narumi fondly. One day, Raidou probably would have had his own agency, but working with Narumi had been going well.]

One small case of someone blaming with a superstitious-looking problem could be part of a larger problem down the line.

[Katsuki has no intention of breaking that trust. What Raidou tells him remains confidential. It may not matter much to Raidou's world if he reveals secrets here, but that's not Katsuki's choice to make. He knows the feeling after all; Midoriya's secret remains under lock and key even if it would be fine to reveal here.]

What are some of the cases you've had? [A beat before he clarifies.] Heroes focus on battle, rescue, and evacuation, but one mission's to save people from a landslide, and next week you get asked to find a damn cat.

[Not all hero missions are created equal. Heroes are as much social workers helping society in many manners, small and large, as much as they're seen battling villains and helping during natural disasters.]

Sounds like you had experience with that.
