The decision has been made. LILITH Japan orders the Outsiders to mobilize to pursue the Imugi.
Given that they are in a foreign country, they are largely dependent on LILITH Korea’s resources. In response to the decision, the Korean branch provides some assistance: the Outsiders are given just enough vehicles to help transport them, essential supplies, and only a few operatives to help guide them. This is the most the Korean branch is able to give, as they must focus on relocating people and restoring peace following the attack.
LILITH announces that the Imugi is currently resting near Gangneung on the east coast and they must move quickly. The effects of Rift poisoning will grow stronger as they approach the source; a sign that they are close to a kaiju. Upon reaching the mountains just outside the city, LILITH informs them that they are right on top of its location.
However, there is no Imugi to be found. After searching the area, Outsiders will discover the source of the trace and the poisoning: eggs. They will find about twelve eggs. When they report their findings, Seokdang will curse. In their rush, they had followed the wrong trace. They didn’t track down an injured and resting Imugi—they tracked down the Imugi’s nest. So where is the Imugi?
Not long after, Outsiders will receive an update on their implants: the Imugi reappeared in Seoul. After seeing the corpse of its mate, it went berserk and attacked the city again. While many of the citizens were evacuated to nearby Incheon and remaining shelters, just as many perished, with the death toll at 168,000 and rising. LILITH’s Korean base is destroyed.
The Imugi was last seen flying north, but the Korean government prohibits the Outsiders from pursuing it again through their territory. By choosing to pursue the kaiju, the Outsiders have abandoned humanity and thus will receive no further support. They are ordered to leave the country immediately.
LILITH Japan will order them to collect as many eggs as possible and continue to the abandoned city of Gangneung, where they will arrange pick up and return to base in Tokyo.
▶ AFTERWORD.
Thanks everyone for participating in our first major Event Decision! We hope you had fun discussing what to do both ICly and OOCly.
After failing to capture the second Imugi and also failing to save a large portion of Seoul's population, characters will be shipped back to Japan. The events of the TDM will springboard from there. Feel free to use this post to thread out any aftermath threads if you would like.
All tags on this log are worth 2 points and will count towards August AC.
(And he sounds genuinely relieved. The last thing he wants is to be predictable. Helping himself to the first bite before the noodles get all soggy and the soup goes cold, he looks up at Denji to show that he heard his question. It just takes a moment to respond. In fact, it seems kind of like he's taking his time before he answers,,)
Aaah! How tasty! This is seriously good, Denji-kun!
(Is he going to answer the question?)
So, you're worried about me. You're a really good kid, you know? (And he smiles, though, his eyes are a little distant as usual,) Don't worry. I'm used to carrying burdens.
[ denji watched the other man carefully, quiet, and at some point— he wasn't even eating anymore. there were a lot of untruths coming his way, plenty of empty smiles. it's not he likes to call tsurumaru a liar, but he had a habit of hiding, but in time denji learned he is genuine where it truly matters. he knows he cares for aki and isn't malicious, so he doesn't mind it. however, this time it's different.
and when he finally hears a hint of truth at the end, something to grasp, denji's expression eases; not in relief, but something else. after all, those words held a familiar ache. ]
(Oh, that isn't what he expects at all and the smile drops. Raising his brow from surprise, he only manages to look at Denji for a moment before looks away.
Ah. He sees. Denji is one of those guys, huh... dangerous.)
I'm used to it. (He just says it again.) Really.
(He's pretty sure he means it.)
This isn't the first time I've failed a mission. It isn't the first time people have died on a mission, either.
And it won't be your last either. We will fuck up again, and maybe that's fine. We're all trying our best. This is not why I called you here, though.
[ reaching under the table, denji grabbed the leg of the other's chair and dragged him closer; close enough so he could flip his chopsticks and hit tsurumaru on the head with the clean side. everytime he utilizes the words 'i'm used to it' he will get assaulted again. ]
I'm tired of everyone being miserable in their room and hiding. You're not alone. If you feel like shit this is when you lean on others. I get you don't want to stress Aki, so you can drop your guard around me.
(He yelps, making a surprised squawking sort of sound and the next thing he knows, his stomach is pressed against the table and he's being bopped on the head with something light. It isn't what he expects at all and he flinches like a child being reprimanded,)
Oya... what a surprise...
(Even if the chopsticks are clean, he brushes at his hair to make sure it's all good,)
I'm not hiding. I'm doing the opposite of that! (He's been running around the base ever since they got back, getting into new trouble and starting fights with random people. Scooting his chair back a bit so he can sit more comfortably, he taps the table and gently scolds,) Finish eating, Denji-kun. The noodles will get soft.
(And he's going to take another few bites of ramen. After awhile, he'll mumble,)
[ he grumbles under his breath, but — he did flip his chopsticks, gently stirring the noodles inside the warm broth. still half-scowling, he glanced at the other from the corner of his eye; giving off a rare stink eye that didn't dwell for too long. his features relaxed, along with his shoulders, hunching forward again. ]
[ a sigh— he's being ignored, but if talking about his past helps tsuru feel better about himself, denji will listen. it's why he called him out to join him for dinner, so they could figure out a way to console each other. right? ]
Aside from being a sword in a museum? .... no.
[ maybe tsuru didn't explain it that way, but it's a guess denji is running with. ]
(Another small bite but he finds that suddenly, the food is heavy and tasteless on his tongue. Frowning, he sets his chopsticks down.)
To make a long story short... I raised a pitiful army— 37,000 people who wanted nothing more than to live and be loved in a better world. Even if we could have destroyed the enemy army, I led them to ruin. I ensured all 37,000 would die under my command.
(Even if his voice is calm, his tone even and carefully controlled, there's a bitter edge. There's something resentful.)
My true mission was to make sure they never succeeded. They were never meant to live.
[ the air between them changed, it's heavy and edging to ominous — denji stares at first, unwilling to jump into it without making sure tsurumaru didn't have more to share, add more to that— story. so, there's silence, stillness, nothing more than the sound of denji's chopsticks hitting the bowl. ]
... Why? [ before he could get an answer, denji warns. ] Be careful.
[ he didn't care if that man was responsible for killing a million souls— denji's morals are questionable as well, it wouldn't rattle him, it wouldn't stop him from hanging out with the other. however, tsurumaru is dating aki. he's close to him, too close. if there is any hint of danger to his friend .... ]
They had to fail to protect a greater peace. If they succeeded, others would think they could also wage war to achieve what they wanted. Their deaths would serve as a lesson to others to never wage a war like that ever again.
(He doesn't regret his actions. He would do it again. But it isn't something he decided lightly. He hated it. He hated the mission. He hated lying. He hated his actions. He hated himself. )
I protect human history. What has already been done in the past can't be undone. It can't be changed for a better story.
(Kind of a weird thing to say without much context. To be honest, this is the first time he's revealed anything about his true purpose as a time traveler.)
So, it's your job to protect the past? Is that it? even if it's a shitty one?
[ for someone as simple-minded and ignorant, denji didn't find the heroic appeal nor the excuse for slaughtering all those men. more importantly, does tsurumaru regret it? he says it doesn't, yet denji can argue otherwise. if the other man was expecting any critique from the half-devil, he won't get one. the death of strangers didn't faze him. ]
(He doesn't answer. He'll let the silence speaks. Yes, that's his job. Even if it's a no good past.)
It is when that history makes "you."
(As much as he may regret, hate, and grieve...)
If it weren't for those events, many of the ones I care for wouldn't be made. I probably wouldn't care for them even one bit. I may not care for you. I may not even care for him.
(For Aki. It was the unique circumstances that made him who he is not that led to him opening up and falling.)
yeah, that made his cheeks warm up with a tiny, growing smile. denji even points at himself, as if double-checking if the reference was for him (and aki, but let's forget about that guy for now!). ]
[ he allows the little poke, and then he's quiet for a bit. it was unfair to tsurumaru, considering everything he has done for denji so far, but he was also someone who is - hard to read, and can come off as dishonest. he would carry a smile when he doesn't feel like it and hide behind his feelings. did he really mean what he just said? denji couldn't say. the half-devil is gullible and has been manipulated way too many times in his life.
with that, he relaxed his shoulders, nodding towards their meal. they're almost done anyway. ] Come on. Finish up ...
(If he didn't really care, would he keep eating a soup that has gone cold, the noodles so soft they break in his chopsticks? It's a shame he couldn't finish eating it all when it was still freshly made but he finishes everything that's left of what has now become a lower quality meal. He eats it as if it was still as good as the first bite.)
Thank you for the meal, Denji-kun. I'll treat you next time.
(Meaning he'll buy him something to eat or do something else... because he is a horrible cook.)

I already am.
(So it's too late. It can't be undone. )
I'm much older than I appear, Denji-kun. I've been watching humans for over a thousand years.
(He's seen plenty of suffering.)
