[ Winter won't say no to cake! Though he does pause to peer at the papers, considering. His birthday was made something of a matter of public record at the last place he was, before LILITH brought him here. It's the only reason he knows when it is at all, now.

Might as well share. Maybe he'll get some gifts when the time rolls around again.

It really is quite fitting, isn't it? In my home world, it's the day after Simril, a stargazing festival.

[ So, aesthetically perfect all around. ]

They would, though it's considered a good thing if it's overcast on the night of Simril. The point is to locate the star associated with one's birth, and being able to find your star on an overcast night is especially lucky.

And if you don't find it at all?

I didn't know when my birthday even was until recently, so I could never fully participate.

Possibly. Much of my early childhood is a blur to me. I've only the barest recollection of my parents. If they called me something different, I don't remember it.

It might have, once upon a time. I've a family I found for myself now, and that alone is worth its weight in gold.

Could you tell me...a little about what they're like? And how you met them?

They're a guild of thieves, to start.

I grew up on the streets. No family, few friends, and even fewer people I trusted, begging an stealing just to get by. One day I got caught with my hand in the pocket of the guild's leader, an honest-to-gods thief. I thought she was going to gut me right then and there.

[ So he's friends with thieves? Maybe even a thief himself. There's no hint of judgment on Ryoji's part, just utter fascination. ]

Evidently she didn't — unless you've been brought back to life. [ Which is possible!! ] What happened then?
