▷ DECISION UPDATE

▶ OUTCOME: BURNING BRIDGES

The decision has been made. LILITH Japan orders the Outsiders to mobilize to pursue the Imugi.

Given that they are in a foreign country, they are largely dependent on LILITH Korea’s resources. In response to the decision, the Korean branch provides some assistance: the Outsiders are given just enough vehicles to help transport them, essential supplies, and only a few operatives to help guide them. This is the most the Korean branch is able to give, as they must focus on relocating people and restoring peace following the attack.

LILITH announces that the Imugi is currently resting near Gangneung on the east coast and they must move quickly. The effects of Rift poisoning will grow stronger as they approach the source; a sign that they are close to a kaiju. Upon reaching the mountains just outside the city, LILITH informs them that they are right on top of its location.

However, there is no Imugi to be found. After searching the area, Outsiders will discover the source of the trace and the poisoning: eggs. They will find about twelve eggs. When they report their findings, Seokdang will curse. In their rush, they had followed the wrong trace. They didn’t track down an injured and resting Imugi—they tracked down the Imugi’s nest. So where is the Imugi?

Not long after, Outsiders will receive an update on their implants: the Imugi reappeared in Seoul. After seeing the corpse of its mate, it went berserk and attacked the city again. While many of the citizens were evacuated to nearby Incheon and remaining shelters, just as many perished, with the death toll at 168,000 and rising. LILITH’s Korean base is destroyed.

The Imugi was last seen flying north, but the Korean government prohibits the Outsiders from pursuing it again through their territory. By choosing to pursue the kaiju, the Outsiders have abandoned humanity and thus will receive no further support. They are ordered to leave the country immediately.

LILITH Japan will order them to collect as many eggs as possible and continue to the abandoned city of Gangneung, where they will arrange pick up and return to base in Tokyo.

▶ AFTERWORD.

After failing to capture the second Imugi and also failing to save a large portion of Seoul's population, characters will be shipped back to Japan. The events of the TDM will springboard from there. Feel free to use this post to thread out any aftermath threads if you would like.

❀ AFTERMATH

MOUNTAINS

(They watch the reports come in and he takes in every image and every line. 168,000 dead, more injured, and numbers still rising. There's the palace they had stayed at and that charming river that had run through the city. Everything looks completely different now. There are so many dead, they can't even all be named right now though some more notable ones begin to trickle into the reports. After he has taken it in, his eyes flicker and he turns off his display.

Anyone watching Tsurumaru will see that he is quiet and carefully calm. He takes a breath and lets out a loud, dramatic sigh,)

Well, you heard the orders. (And he marches towards one of the eggs so he can tap it with the handle of his sword,) This is what we're here for now.

And then we leave.

(And he smiles,)

That last part should be easy.

GANGNEUNG

(While waiting to be taken back home, Tsurumaru refuses to sit still and wallow about. Instead, he takes to exploring the abandoned town. It's by the sea and he wants to go and check it out. It's eerily quiet with only the crashing waves and wind for sound. It feels familiar out here and he can't help but laugh to himself.

If he hears someone approaching, he'll settle down and hum,)

(Once they're back in Neo Tokyo, Tsurumaru can be found carrying about as usual. He does his regular training, he visits his usual cafes, and he's up to no good.

He can be found hanging tissues filled with glitter to doorways so when they open, the person coming in is essentially glitter bombed. Or he might be found covering motion sensors with clear tape so when you approach the door, it doesn't open at all. Just silly, harmless things around the base.

He can also be found all around the base and in the general vicinity of where some people may be working when they're using their civilian identities. It might even be his first time in some of these areas. Is he just keeping himself busy or is he maybe actually checking in on people…)

[ It's probably a familiar sight to Tsurumaru, to see Ratio surrounded by books, documents and the like, laser focused on the paper in front of him and working away on research despite everything that has happened. Anyone less astute might even think Ratio was unaffected by the aftermath of their decision, seeing as the pile of papers slowly growing next to him indicates he's probably been at this since they came back.

If it's been several days since, Ratio would be noticeably more haggard than usual, but otherwise, there would be no other indication of his emotional state. ]

(Tsurumaru is going to come over and just sit across from him without announcement. Reaching out, he takes a book from a tall pile and begins to flip through it. There's not a word spoken at first; only the hushed sound of pages being flipped. Clearly, he isn't reading it but he is skimming the headers and looking over whatever pictures and graphs there are so it isn't all totally for show.

Finally, after some time,)

Can you really understand all of this?

[ Under normal circumstances, Ratio would engage in banter with Tsurumaru, as he did previously. He is more than capable of multitasking, even when the conversation is banal and irrelevant to his work.

But these aren't normal circumstances. His eyes briefly flicker up to Tsurumaru. The bags under his eyes aren't concealed, and he's not wearing his usual red eyeliner either.]

What do you want?

[ Seems the good doctor's not in the mood for pleasantries. ]

[ He says, looking at the eggs dubiously.

Upset? Naw, one of the few people actually fine with whatever happened, he nudged one of the eggs with a foot. It's rather large, after all. ]

I think that depends on how far Gangneung is.

[ He sure as hell isn't moving them. ]

Well, we've made it this far!

(He isn't deterred,)

And if you think about it, these eggs aren't as heavy as other things~

[ He'd lift an eyebrow, but... well. There's one missing. It's hard to tell. ]

They look heavy, and I'm not exactly one for manual labor. Perhaps they should have thought about that.

[ As if it could be predicted. ]

Death tolls are normal. The Gun Devil killed thousands too, and he’d seen the numbers light up television screens and heard it on radio broadcasts. He’d made a decision and thought he’d be able to live with it, but the aftermath is hard. It’s difficult to think about their choices leading to so much death and suffering, but…

But they did. And now they’re here.

It takes him a little while to find Tsurumaru, but when he does his hair is down and he looks tired. A little gaunt. Being on a beach again is strange, especially now he knows what happened last time, and he crosses his arms. ]

Are you going to scream?

[cranekin]

(Looking back at Aki and back at the sea, he folds his hands behind his back and looks like he's thinking,)

Are you that angry to see me?

[ Aki had given chase, after all, and it doesn't seem as if Tsurumaru is happy about the idea of it. He's quiet for a moment, before he leans down with a sigh, eyes closed. ]

Or do you just need to get it out? Either one is fine.

[ After having spent too much time sitting in a corner and wallowing in her own misery, Ereshkigal decides a breath of fresh air could do her good. If anything to avoid a certain god of conflict who seems to follow her like her shadow. There should be no one within the ruins, no one to laugh at her or rub it in what an useless goddess she is.

Yet at the end of it all, by the sea, she finds Tsuru. One of the few people whose presence she would find comforting in such times, and here he is. Perhaps there is a hand that guides fate in this world. ]

No. It would be... Undignified for a goddess.

[ She lowers her head, bangs hiding her eyes. As if she has any dignity left as a goddess after what just happened. A good goddess would have found a way to prevent this disaster. ]

Have you, Tsuru?

[cranekin]

Ah, I see. (He nods once in understanding and looks back to the sea,) You're too cool for that.

(Bringing his hands behind his back, he rocks on his heels a bit in the sand, letting himself sink a little deeper into it and thinks,)

I already did. A long time ago. The beach is the best place to do it; no one will hear you over the waves.

Why do those simple words sting so? He did not mean it, of course. But she's not cool. She's not even a dignified goddess. Right now she is nothing but another soul who failed.

[ It comes without warning. She starts screaming, as loudly as she can. And it lasts for a good twenty seconds before she finally stops. ]

[ Finally, she plops down onto the ground and lifts her head to look at the ocean. The waves. It's comforting. ]

... There's an ocean in the Underworld. The abyss. But there are no waves, no noise, no light reflecting upon it. No fishes, no foam, no life. Only a primordial sea that separates my realm from the final destination of the souls.

[ The root of everything. The beginning and the end. Where souls go to be reborn. She tries to smile, but it's hard. ]

You're the first person who's ever heard me scream, you know.

[ But it's not the first time she's screamed like that. It's an important distinction. She's not a dignified goddess when no one can look at her. It's just the image she tries to project. ]

[In trying to keep busy, Yato has taken to running simple errands for petty cash, such as it is, and thus isn't paying as much mind to his surroundings as perhaps he should be after their battle. So when he happens to go through a booby-trapped door it unleashes a veritable avalanche of glitter upon the god, making him truly sparkle divinely.

Yet all he can do is stand rooted to the spot, blinking in disbelief at what's just occurred.

I'm not much of a screamer.

[No, she really doesn’t do much or any of that. Raising her voice is a rare occurrence even here. Screaming, no she’ll leave that to the others. She’s sure there’ll be more of it in addition to whatever amount there’s already been.

So no screaming, instead she’s looking at the water too. What happened in Seoul isn’t really her focus, her thoughts are more on the Outsiders, the state of their group after all that. Definite hit to morale, among other things, and who knows what’s facing them when they get back.]

(He laughs and still facing the sea, he places his hands on his hips and raises his heads up high,)

How cool.

(So cool... it's admirable, he thinks. But given how he's acting, he probably will not yell. Not in front of someone he doesn't really know.)

( Vash gives Tsurumaru an easy enough smile, he's used to doing that in the face of terrible things. Of course the corner of his eyes are a little pinched, mouth too, the signs of exhaustion he can't bluster away. Still, his gaze sweeps curiously over the other man, and he wonders if he's thinking of the people they saved, the ones who might not still be alive now. Maybe not, maybe he just wanted the peace and quiet. )

I think I'll pass. I'm not entirely sure I'd stop, you know?

( And there's one hundred and fifty years of shit weighing, he has a lot of aimless grief. Better to direct it into helping people instead. So he pauses by the other man, head cocked to the side like a curious bird. )

You alright, Tsurumaru? You didn't get hurt, did you?

[cranekin]

You'll stop.

(He says it simply, as if it's its pure fact. Like the sun will rise and water is wet.)

Eventually, you'll run out of air and you won't be able to make a single sound!

(Hands on his hips, still facing the sea, he keeps his head up high. When he speaks, his tone is light and he sounds unbothered. If something is on his mind, it's difficult to say right now,)

I'm fine. (Just fine.) I heal faster than most humans, see?

(And he turns to face Vash, pointing at his own head. There's nothing to see. One would never know he'd had a giant gash there a few days before.)
